The first part of Vikings season 6 ended on a cliffhanger, with Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) being stabbed by Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) during a battle. Bjorn was still alive when the episode ended, which has made fans wonder if he somehow survived – or, perhaps, that part of the battle wasn’t real. Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings made its debut on History Channel in 2013, and even though it was originally planned to be a miniseries, it was so well received that it was renewed for a second season. Vikings is now on its sixth and final season, with fans waiting for the final episodes to be released.
Vikings initially followed Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his travels and raids alongside his Viking brothers. As the series progressed, it began shifting its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own travels, making them the protagonists. Though Vikings has followed their stories closely, it has focused more on Bjorn and Ivar, as both have been fighting for power. The midseason finale of Vikings season 6, titled “The Best Laid Plans”, saw the battle between the Rus (led by Ivar) and the Vikings (led by Bjorn), intertwined with a conversation between the two brothers at the beach.
What viewers (and Bjorn) weren’t expecting was Ivar stabbing his brother and leaving him to die in the battlefield. However, the way the scene played out has made some viewers wonder if what they witnessed was actually a dream, and Bjorn was never stabbed. A Reddit user pointed out that the way Ivar suddenly appeared and attacked his brother doesn’t seem right, and the “multiple timelines of the attack” (as in: it didn’t play out synchronized) also made them wonder if it was real or not. The author of the post suggests Bjorn was imagining different scenarios of what could happen during the battle, including being fatally wounded by his brother.
Other users complained about how “poorly written” the battle was, while others believe it could have been all in Bjorn's mind, though not exactly a dream. It’s worth noting that after being stabbed, the scene went back to their conversation on the beach, where Bjorn told Ivar he would defeat him, with the latter saying that the Gods were no longer on Bjorn’s side. Another Reddit user suggests the attack wasn’t in Bjorn’s head but in Ivar’s, who was imagining how he would win the battle – and that obviously includes killing his brother.
Both Ludwig and Hirst have teased Bjorn’s return in season 6b, though whether it will be through flashbacks, visions, or because he survived is still unknown. Stranger things have happened in Vikings, and it definitely wouldn’t be the first time a fan-favorite character dies, but that particular death wouldn’t really do justice to Bjorn Ironside.
