When it was announced, the Star Wars sequel trilogy was met with worry from fans. Would it go down the same path as the prequels? The release of The Force Awakens calmed fans, as they were given a safe, but incredibly enjoyable sequel. Episode VII, however, was incredibly divisive: a great film in general, but full of terrible, terrible decisions. If that wasn’t enough, the conclusion to the entire franchise was even more divisive, giving fans a film that was a fun watch but didn’t exactly make sense at times.
These films were centered on a huge cast of characters, some new and some old. We’ve ranked the most prominent ones by intelligence.
11 Rose Tico
There is nothing to suggest that Rose is unintelligent, per-se, but in comparison to many of her Star Wars co-stars, she just fails to shine.
She takes an incredibly long time to realize that Finn is trying to escape, her mission with him in The Last Jedi was a gargantuan failure, and she wasn’t deemed helpful enough to join the fight on the frontlines in The Rise Of Skywalker.
10 General Hux
At first, Hux seemed like a fierce leader with ambitions of incredible power as he worked his way through the ranks. His command of the huge First Order fleet was mesmerizing.
However, the strange comedy sketch at the start of The Last Jedi and his immediate death after making it obvious that he was the spy just proved that he wasn’t the genius tactician he thought he was.
9 Finn
Finn started his life in Star Wars as a faceless troop following orders. The very fact that he was able to break out of his mind-controlled state and rebel against his previous masters suggests a level of intelligence.
At the same time, however, he is known to make some stupid decisions and not quite know what’s going on.
8 Poe Dameron
Poe is an incredibly gifted pilot. That gains him some points right out of the gate because for anyone to learn something to that level of expertise, they must be pretty clever.
However, his constant disregard for the rules sets him back frequently. If he really knew what he was doing, he’d sit back and let those above him tell him what needs to happen.
7 Han Solo
Han is in a similar boat to Poe in general, where he is an incredibly skilled pilot, capable of delivering witty one-liners but is rarely able to pay attention to authority figures.
In The Force Awakens, he is much older, calmer and wiser. This has allowed him to take on a new perspective that means he now knows exactly what it is he needs to do.
6 Rey Palpatine
For the first two films in the trilogy, Rey was a new start and a new hope (pardon the pun) for the resistance. She was supposedly irrelevant to the fight but was able to slot herself in and become a powerful Jedi with what seemed like incredible skill.
Then fans learned that the reason she was so powerful was that she was related to Palpatine, and then she drew from the power of the Jedi of the past to defeat him. It undermined her character development somewhat.
5 Kylo Ren
In a very similar way to Rey, Kylo Ren spent the first two films developing into an incredibly powerful presence on the dark side of the force. He could harness power beyond anything we had seen before, and use the force in ways even Yoda never demonstrated.
The idea that Palpatine had orchestrated his turn to the dark through the voices of Vader and Snoke undermined his power slightly as well.
4 Leia Organa
The original trilogy might have spent a lot of its time painting Leia as a damsel in distress, but the sequels did well to turn this on its head.
Leia was now a powerful figure leading the resistance with tactical strength that, in the long run, was one of their main reasons for their victory.
3 C-3PO And BB-8 (And R2-D2)
All of the droids have the natural advantage of being near the top of every list of intelligence simply because they’re built to be clever.
BB-8 zooms around communicating with Poe, R2-D2 does basically nothing (but we’ll let him off because we know he’s clever) and C-3PO continues to promote human-cyborg relations like it’s going out of fashion.
2 Luke Skywalker
Luke was once the main character in Star Wars, so their treatment of his character in the sequels wasn’t the best.
He was reduced to a moody old hermit who was almost incomparable to his young self. However, he did provide the most impressive use of the force in the history of Star Wars when he tricked Kylo into thinking he was really fighting him.
1 Emperor Palpatine
Whether or not his presence brought down the implied intelligence of Rey and Ben, you cannot deny the genius behind Emperor Palpatine.
He managed to: stay alive (in clone form) without anyone knowing; orchestrate the entire First/Final Order; convert Ben to the dark side by imitating Vader and creating fake Snokes.
