Sons of Anarchy: 10 Ways Clay Got Worse & Worse | ScreenRant

The TV show Sons Of Anarchy was full of evil characters but most of them did good deeds once in a while. However, Clay Murrow (Ron Perlman) was irredeemable. The first SAMCRO president in the series was a heartless gangster who would kill, lie, and frame on a frequent basis.

His behavior made him a good antagonist but it also made him quite unlikable. Clay would eventually meet his demise in the sixth season and before this happened, he had regressed to the point where viewers saw it coming.

10 Became Violent Towards Gemma

Clay had always been a violent man since the beginning of the series but when dealing with his wife Gemma, he was more understanding and loving no matter how much she had wronged him. However, all this changed during the fourth season.

In the episode titled "Hands," Clay and Gemma argued about the money he took as well as JT's death. She began provoking him but instead of simply leaving or handling the situation with more maturity, he assaulted her until she was all bloody.

9 Stopped Consulting Club Members

Part of the reason why Clay fell out of favor with other club members was his penchant for being secretive. He should have realized that this was causing problems hence he should have stopped. But he just kept on doing it and eventually, the chickens came home to roost.

He never informed the club about the situation between Opie Winston and the ATF. He also got in bed with the Galindo Cartel before consulting the club members first. He was basically tyrannical and self-serving since all his decisions were meant to benefit him first.

8 His Infidelity

When the series started, Clay and Gemma were the best lovers. They were partners-in-crime who covered each other's sins. But as the series progressed, they grew apart. Clay cheated on Gemma with a "Crow Eater" named Cherry.

The sad part is that he didn't really like her. He just used her as a pawn to punish Half-Sack who actually liked Cherry. Gemma eventually found out and she didn't take the whole infidelity incident too kindly. She brutally assaulted her using a skateboard.

7 Continued To Kill SAMCRO Members

SAMCRO members were like brothers. After the JT incident, Clay initially refrained from harming fellow SAMCRO members but it appears he had amnesia and forgot the memo. In the Season 4 episode titled "Family Recipe," Clay shot and killed his long time friend and founding club member Piney.

And it was all due to a selfish reason again. When Piney found out about JT's letters, Clay figured the best way to stop him from informing the rest of the club was to kill him. He then went on to frame the Lobos Sonora Cartel for the murder. In the next season, he also set up Greg to die.

6 Became A Pathological Liar

Clay had a habit of doing things and lying about what exactly happened. The more the series progressed, the more he lied. When the club found out that he murdered Piney, he lied that he did it in self-defense. He stated that Piney was drunk and that he tried to shoot him first.

He also lied about being a victim of the Charming burglaries yet he was pulling the strings. After the Nomads that were doing the burglaries killed the Sheriff's wife, he confronted them, saying: "Idiots! You weren't supposed to kill her!"

5 Refused To End His Feud With Jax

The biggest injustice Clay ever did to himself was to keep on feuding with Jax. He could have been better of trying to win Jax's favor and trying to make amends for all the wrongs he ever did to him. However, his ego got the better of him and he still kept on fighting Jax.

He even went to the extremes by trying to kill Tara. When Jax found out about this, there was no way back for him. If only Clay tried to right his own wrongs and try to get back in favor with Jax and the club, he probably wouldn't have ended up dead.

4 Continued Doing Business With The IRA

The IRA wronged the Sons many times. It was IRA gun dealer Cameron Hayes who kidnapped Jax's son Abel in the second season. Galen also tried to kill a couple of SAMCRO members too after he felt offended for being linked up with August Marks.

Despite all the wrongs that the IRA had done to the Sons, Clay continued to do business with him. This made the club hate him even more. When he met his death, he was even making plans with Galen to form a new crew and continue being their distributor.

3 The Jealousy

Clay didn't like to see anything good going on, especially if it didn't involve him. He was often jealous of Jack but other than that, he was uneasy about Gemma having new lovers. After the club had voted him out, he went to the brothel to confront Nero.

He lied that he had slept with a prostitute in order to anger Gemma. It worked because Gemma beat up the girl. Meanwhile, Nero refused to back down so Clay left. Later on, Nero's operation was shut down, and he was arrested. It was then suggested that Clay was behind it.

2 Betrayed People He Made Deals With

Clay was the worst person to make deal with since he never honored the agreements. He always made it seem like he was going to do so but then he ended up turning on people. This was clearly revealed through his deal GoGo, Frankie, and Greg.

The trio (the Nomads) agreed to rob houses for Clay in order to undermine Jax's leadership. In return, he would give them his cut of the gun and cocaine money. However, during the incident at Unser's trailer, Clay betrayed them and killed Greg. He then denied knowing the trio.

1 The Oxygen Tank

Clay's streak as a pretender continued when he recovered after being shot by Opie. After Piney's death, Opie had discovered that Clay was responsible so he shot him. During his time at the Intensive Care Unit, he needed an oxygen tank to breathe.

In the Season 5 episode titled "Small Word" Clay had recovered to the point where he no longer needed the tank. However, he kept on using it to draw sympathy, and to fool people he was still weak.
