Shrek is one of those films that has proven to have a tremendously enduring legacy. There was clearly something about the tale of a green ogre (voiced by Mike Meyers, no less), that managed to tap into some deeply-held desires in the culture around it. It doesn’t hurt that the animation was truly magical for its time, and that it remains one of the most cleverly-written animated films made in the last few decades.
It is thus utterly unsurprising that it has managed to inspire a variety of objects and derivatives, some of which can be very strange indeed.
10 Face Masks
There’s something ironic and absolutely hilarious about the fact that Shrek, a film about a notoriously ugly and green ogre, is also being used to sell a face mask (which, presumably, is designed to make one’s skin better). After all, it’s not as if the green monster is well-known for his skin regimen. However, for those who want to see whether or not it works, it’s actually not that expensive. Let’s just hope that it doesn’t turn anyone green.
9 A Mug With The Entire Script Written On It
One might be pardoned for thinking that it would be impossible to fit the script for an entire feature film onto a surface as small as a mug, but one would be dreadfully mistaken. One can’t help but be blown away not only by the decision to put this on a mug, but also by the grace with which it was accomplished. There’s one pressing question that needs to be answered, though: is it dishwasher safe?
8 A Play-Doh Root Canal Kit
Sometimes, it seems as if companies are so caught up in the idea that they can do something that they don’t really pause to think about whether they should. How else can one explain the presence of a Play Doh set that lets you perform a root canal on Shrek? It’s hard to tell whether this particular item is horrifying, unintentionally comedic, or both.
Whatever the case, it is certainly to be the source of nightmares for many kids.
7 A Shrek/Despacito Swimsuit
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, this swimsuit comes along. Once again, it’s hard to tell whether one is supposed to find this particular item horrifying, comedic, or both. It’s not as if Shrek is the most beautiful creature in the world, so it’s a little strange to see him appear on a swimsuit. You have to give them credit, though. The red eyes are a nice touch (even if they are a little disturbing).
6 Shrek Twinkies
Apparently, it’s not enough that Twinkies are already a color that really doesn’t seem natural. Apparently, someone in the marketing department thought that it was a good idea to substitute the regular white cream filling with a neon shade of green. It’s hard to imagine anyone finding a Twinkie filled with green goo appetizing, but one would assume that they taste the same as their regular counterparts.
5 Shrek The Musical
There seems to be an unspoken rule in theater that if something exists, it can become a musical. Shrek proved to be no exception, and Shrek: The Musical was born. It’s sort of a mixture of the various films, as well as a novel. It was a very lavish production (hardly surprising, considering the subject material), and it would go on to be nominated for several Tony Awards (though it only won one).
4 Shrek Sneakers
One of the other unspoken rules of moviemaking is that literally anything can be turned into a product. Thus, in addition to swimsuits, there have also been shoes created that are designed to mimic the colors of the titular ogre and his costume. The result is actually pretty pleasant, and the greens and browns actually complement one another in some interesting ways. They’re a perfect thing to wear on the first day of school.
3 A Fighter Game
It was probably inevitable that Shrek would be turned into a video game. After all, it’s quite common for filmmakers, particularly of animated films, to make films with the eventual video game market in sight. However, this one is a little bit of a surprise, since it’s actually a fighter game in which the different players beat one another up in an arena.
It’s not as true to the spirit of the film as one might wish, but it does have its charms.
2 An MP3 Player
Once upon a time, before iPhones were ubiquitous, there were these little gadgets called MP3 players. Of course, what used to be a marker of luxury is now nothing more than a historical curiosity, but back in the day these were actually very popular. It’s absolutely unsurprising, then, that there was also one that was designed to mimic the appearance of everyone’s favorite ogre. Perhaps some things are better left in the past.
1 This
Some things in the world just...shouldn’t exist. This pillow that is an unholy mashup of Nicholas Cage and Shrek is one of those things. One can’t help but wonder what, exactly, prompted someone to try to put together these two things that definitely should not go together. Also, it’s incredibly unclear whether the result was intended to be as horrifically funny as it is, or whether that was just an added bonus.
