Seinfeld: 5 Side Characters Everyone Likes (& 5 Everyone Hates)

The iconic sitcom Seinfeld is beloved for its main characters, who are actually pretty bad people. That's the hallmark of the show and what helps it stand out in a sea of funny sitcoms about friends living in Manhattan.

Seinfeld isn't always "the show about nothing" but no matter what kind of episode fans are tuning in to, they're always going to notice a lot of minor characters who are still quite integral to the plot. Parents, bosses, love interests, and acquaintances are all part of the story. So, who are the best and worst people in Jerry's NYC world?

10 Likes: Newman

Wayne Knight's Seinfeld character, Newman, is Jerry's neighbor who is funny without really knowing it. His feud with Jerry brings a lot of life to the long-running sitcom, making Newman a character whom everyone loves.

Whether he's proving how bad he actually is at delivering mail or just hanging out with Kramer, Newman is always a welcome sight.

9 Hates: Susan Ross

Susan and George's wedding never takes place, as Heidi Swedberg's Seinfeld character passes away after licking an envelope. Her time on the sitcom is famous as the actress wasn't popular on set, and fans of the show definitely wouldn't have minded if Susan had never been on at all.

There's really nothing to like about Susan. She's dull, doesn't like anything about George, and doesn't have any quirky or unique personality traits.

8 Likes: J. Peterman

J. Peterman (John O'Hurley) is Elaine's boss and a phenomenal storyteller. He has a specific way of talking and often seems like he's in another world, thinking about the places he has traveled.

Peterman adds comic relief to a show with tons of funny people, which is saying a lot.

7 Hates: Kenny Bania

Kenny Bania (Steve Hytner) is a fellow comic whom Jerry knows and he's another side character who fans hate.

There's nothing to like here as Bania is annoying, not funny, and always getting on Jerry's nerves. His stand-up is so bad that it's impossible to respect him. He always says "It's the best, Jerry! The best!" and it's incredibly irritating.

6 Likes: Morty Seinfeld

Barney Martin's character, Morty Seinfeld, is Jerry's father who always seems very frustrated and put-upon. He has an interesting past as he once invented a trench coat without a belt that becomes the focal point of a very funny episode, and he just wants to live a simple retired life in Florida.

Morty's best moment is when he gets upset that there are various waiting rooms at the doctor's office. It's one of the funniest scenes on the show.

5 Hates: Mr. Pitt

Elaine has many rough moments on the show and she doesn't always behave well at work. But even though she has a lot of problems with being professional, one of her worst bosses is Mr. Pitt (Ian Abercrombie).

This character is tough, mean, and not likable at all. He's definitely much worse than Peterman, a character that fans enjoy seeing onscreen. There never seems to be much reason for Pitt to be there.

4 Likes: Frank Costanza

Jerry Stiller plays George's dad, Frank, and he is absolutely hilarious. He talks to his son about very inappropriate things (like his wife and George's mom's bra) and can never just chill out and relax.

Frank is an easy side character to like, as he has a lot of great lines, like, "Doctor gave me a relaxation cassette. When my blood pressure gets too high, the man on the tape tells me to say 'serenity now.'" That's a classic Seinfeld moment.

3 Hates: Estelle Costanza

Estelle Harris plays George's mother Estelle, who screams a lot and is a very passionate person.

Every scene that she's in is funny, but Seinfeld fans who have seen every episode countless times might find her a little tiring after a while as she takes everything way too seriously and gets incredibly upset. Her character could have been developed a little more.

2 Likes: Uncle Leo

Len Lesser's Seinfeld character Uncle Leo has many hilarious scenes. He really cares about Jerry and wants to spend a lot of time with him.

Uncle Leo is a character who everyone likes because he's sweet, funny, and he gets really worked up over things that don't matter. He can be petty, like when he cares about the watch that he gave Jerry, and while IRL this would be annoying, on Seinfeld it's charming.

1 Hates: Jack Klompus

The season 3 episode "The Pen" is totally hilarious, mostly because Jack (Sandy Baron) insists that Jerry borrow a pen that he doesn't even want. It's an episode that can be re-watched many times.

Jack is a side character on Seinfeld who everyone hates because he gets really annoying about this so-called present. It's such a small, silly thing to care about, and yet he becomes obsessed with it (which really could describe any character on this show).
