RHONY: What's Dorinda Medley's Obsession with Tinsley Mortimer?

This season on The Real Housewives of New York, the biggest beef between our wives has left fans scratching their heads. Just why is Dorinda so angry at Tinsley? Is Tinsley that annoying or is it undeserved?

Per usual The Real Housewives of New York hit the ground running with their latest season, leaving the faint memory of Bethanny Frankel behind them, unlike other franchises, New York Housewives carve out their storylines for the season early and with such fervent determination it’ll give you beef whiplash. However, one does wonder, just how are these women able to sustain momentum on a fight that doesn’t even make sense? Case in point: Dorinda Medley’s 2020 assassination of Mortimer. Fans have been asking, what is this really about?

It all seemed to come to a boil last season, as many of the wives seemed intent on knowing Tinsley’s relationship status with her long-brewing on-and-off-again beau, Scott Kluth. Why? Like the rest of the ladies’ political stances: It’s not clear. The general consensus seems to be that Scott is a full-time sugar daddy, which apparently is a bad thing. If the cost of coddling Tinsley’s bubblegum womb of safety and princess fantasies is a Hermes Alligator bucket bag, then that’s a pretty good deal. At the reunion, the sentiment was echoed: Just leave her alone! If she wants to live an upper east-side Tinsley Telenovela, let her! Like a Scary Island Kelly Bensimon, It seemed to be put to bed.

So it was particularly baffling when the season kicked off, so did Dorinda, rehashing the drama. Fishing it up from the depths of the Mariana Trench, Dorinda committed to the storyline hard. In what was akin to *insert sports reference about coming out guns blazing here*, Dorinda let her have it, summarizing thusly:

“This is not about Tinsley and Scott. It’s about transparency, there seems to be a lot of side game going on that we all find out about. I think Tinsley is a riddle that none of us are going to want to solve.”

She goes in even further, screaming insults at Tinsley like “Kindergarten is starting!” and “You’re gonna be late for the bus!” There’s two reaction shots in the background: Newbie Leah with her jaw to the floor and Luann and Sonja gleefully picking at a fresh bowl of organic popcorn - they’ve seen this movie before and they love it.

The feud continues over the course of the next few episodes, wherein our heroes and the audience alike continue to be confused over the conflama. It’s frustrating for sure, especially when Tinsley could have nipped this in the bud with a simple lip-sync rendition of Shangela’s Sugar Daddy monologue from the monumental feature-length documentary Episode 2 of season 3 of "Our Lady of Sacred Grace RuPaul’s Drag Race Untuckethed." This is obviously a deeper issue as the newly crowned Ms. Meddler seems to be set off at a moment’s notice, destroying Tinsley for merely existing.

It’s understandable to criticize a friend for only engaging in surface-level banter, but that’s not the impression viewers get from Tinsley. Maybe it’s that Tinsley hasn’t really suffered any real hardship, like the death of a husband, a great love. But in some ways, Tinsley has experienced that. Perhaps it’s that she doesn’t acknowledge the hurt from the divorce of her first marriage, while still carrying the Mortimer name? That’s more relatable, so why doesn’t Dorinda say just that? “Hey, maybe this obsession with making Scott work, wanting a baby, freezing your eggs and dancing in wedding dresses is to mask the pain of divorce?”, instead, for our sycophantic enjoyment, audiences get to enjoy a middle-aged woman drunkenly screaming insults outside of a corn maze at noon.

As the season unfolds hopefully we’ll see some sort of resolution. Dorinda is a fan favorite so it’s difficult to see her go down this dark path and to drag someone down with them. Perhaps with the added rigueur of having an ally and friend, Tinsley will find the strength to go a few more rounds of Muhammad Medley. The theme of this season of The Real Housewives of New York seems to be young versus old, a strategy employed by the Bravo Gods to usher in new blood. Little do they realize this ‘young blood’ is but a drop in the chalice our wives slurp from, who have already undoubtedly signed a deal with a half-naked Isabella Rossellini in the ungodly pursuit of eternal life - we stan.
