Peep Show: Mark's 5 Cringiest Moments (& 5 For Jez) | ScreenRant

From The Office to The Inbetweeners, British TV comedy is paved with cringe humor. And one of the cringiest sitcoms ever made is Peep Show, made even cringier by the point-of-view shooting style putting the viewer right in the characters’ shoes. The antics of Mark and Jez provided fans with just as much discomfort as laughter.

Across nine seasons (seven more than the average British sitcom), Mark and Jez got into some horrendously awkward situations; the kind of situations that you’d play over in your head for years if they happened in real life. So, here are Mark’s five cringiest moments, and Jez's too, for good measure.

10 Mark: “And Then I Go And Spoil It All...”

Jez tells Mark that every musician needs to write a hit song as big as “Something Stupid,” because it’ll provide them with enough royalties to live off of for years. The song remains in Mark’s head when he calls Sophie and gets her answering machine.

He leaves a meandering voicemail, at which Jez is increasingly mortified, and ends it by singing, “And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like...I like you.”

9 Jez: Dancing Alone At His Wedding

In the season 2 finale “Wedding,” Nancy asks Jez if he’ll marry her, purely for citizenship purposes. Still, Jez gets very excited about marrying Nancy because he’s been falling for her ever since they met at Rainbow Rhythms and he’s terrified she’ll leave him.

Midway through the wedding, Nancy is called in for a job interview, so she leaves before the first dance. The DJ hasn’t been informed, so he says, “This next one goes out to Jez and Nancy!” And then, Jez has to awkwardly dance alone at his wedding.

8 Mark: “Is That...Normal?”

Jez invites Super Hans and Big Suze over for a magic mushroom party in season 3’s “Shrooming,” but Mark throws a wrench in the works when he becomes sick and cancels his business trip to Germany. In order to prevent the bad vibes that Mark would bring, Jez locks him in his bedroom and gives him a brown takeout bag to use as a toilet.

When Mark finally gets out, he rushes into the doorless bathroom to do his business. Johnson is disturbed by this and asks Mark, “Is that...normal pooing?”

7 Jez: Eating The Dog

In season 4’s “Holiday,” Jez books a canal trip for Mark’s stag do. Along the way, they meet a couple of sisters who are traveling with their dad and their pet dog, Mummy. After Jez accidentally runs over Mummy in the dad’s car, he and Mark try to burn the corpse to no avail.

Unable to dispose of the semi-cooked dead dog, Jez takes it aboard the family’s boat and they ask him what’s in the bag. He claims it’s barbecued turkey, and takes a bite of the meat to prove it, but they still figure out that it’s their missing pet.

6 Mark: Captain Corrigan Flies Without A Licence

In season 5’s “Spin War,” Mark meets Dobby and they hit it off immediately. But speaking to a woman gets him in a lot of trouble with the “floating voters” who still hate him for jilting Sophie on their wedding day. When Dobby invites Mark into the stationery cupboard and asks him to get her something from a high shelf, she...gets a little too close to him.

This causes a physical reaction from Mark that forces him to vacate the premises. And then he runs right into Sophie and Jeff smoking a joint in the stairwell.

5 Jez: Needlessly Taking A “Bullet” For Mark

In the Peep Show dictionary, taking a “wank bullet” is a sacrifice one makes by taking responsibility for pornography viewing that a loved one did at work. When Elena was caught with porn on her office computer, Jez told her boss that he was the one who downloaded it because he has a made-up disease.

Later, when Jez thinks that Mark’s new boss has found his porn on her laptop (without realizing Dobby has deleted the file), he confronts her and shamelessly tells her about his fictional disease, costing Mark his dream job.

4 Mark: The School Reunion

When Mark takes Jez to his school reunion in season 4’s “Handyman,” he gets talking to his old crush, Sally, and her new husband, Foz. He asks them if they have kids and they say they don’t, and ask why he asked. Then, Mark says, “Oh, no reason. I mean, I love kids. Not in a bad way, in a nice way. I mean, I’m not on the Child Protection Register...yet. Which proves I’m not a paedo!”

Things get more awkward from there, ending with a plea from Mark that the conversation change subjects.

3 Jez: A Christmas Joke

When Mark and Jez host their first Christmas in season 7’s “Seasonal Beatings,” they begin preparations for dinner and Jez tells Mark that he forgot to get the turkey. Mark launches into an explosive tirade in which he calls Jez, among other things, a “cretin,” a “total f***ing idiot,” and a “f***ing sh**head.”

On the brink of tears, Jez explains to Mark that he got an organic turkey that he researched online and that he was just making “a Christmas joke.”

2 Mark: The Disastrous Wedding

Mark’s entire wedding day is his cringiest moment. He flippantly proposes to a barista, he tries to get himself hit by a car, he tells Jez to pee his pants in the church, he bursts into tears at the altar, he has celebratory rice thrown at him with malicious intent, and Sophie leaves him before they’ve even made it off the church grounds.

Fans watching season 4 play out knew that Mark and Sophie’s wedding would be a disaster, but it turned out even worse than they could’ve imagined.

1 Jez: Peeing Himself At Mark’s Wedding

When Mark is debating how to handle his upcoming nuptials, he takes Jez up to a hiding place on the second floor of the church. Jez has needed to urinate for a while, and Mark tells him to simply pee his pants. And he immediately starts doing it.

As it begins to seep through the floor and dribbles all over the wedding guests, Mark pleads with Jez to stop. Jez says, “P*** yourself! Stop p***ing yourself! It’s not that simple! The floodgates are open!”
