Minecraft Dungeons Dethrones Animal Crossing Switch's #1 Best-Seller

After just under two weeks on the market, Minecraft Dungeons has taken the #1 best seller spot from Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the the Nintendo Switch. First announced back in 2018, Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler spin-off of Minecraft that released on May 26 on all major platforms. Unlike MinecraftMinecraft Dungeons' gameplay is more combat-oriented, as players proceed through procedurally generated dungeons, fighting mobs and grinding lootMinecraft Dungeons so far has drawn comparisons to franchises such as Diablo or The Binding of Isaac more so than the original Minecraft.

Meanwhile, Animal Crossing: New Horizons released back in late March and became the second best-selling game of 2020, surpassed the lifetime sales of all previous Animal Crossing games in the process, and has been universally praised by fans and critics. Being a well-made entry in a beloved franchise, combined with positive coverage, and a global pandemic allowed Animal Crossing: New Horizons to find unprecedented levels of success, such as becoming the #1 best selling title on the Nintendo Switch for three months straight.

But now, according to a tweet from game industry analyst Benji Sales, Minecraft Dungeons has taken the title of best seller from Animal Crossing: New Horizons on the Switch. With the name recognition of a transcendent video game franchise like Minecraft behind it, as well as a lower price point (Minecraft Dungeons only costs $19.99, vs $59.99 for Animal Crossing: New Horizons), it makes sense that the new title would take some market share away from Animal Crossing: New Horizons. However, to outsell a game with the head start that Animal Crossing: New Horizons had, is no small feat; A Nintendo fiscal report states that Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 11.77 million units by the end of March, and a total of 13.41 million units after six weeks on the market.

For Minecraft Dungeons, its hard to imagine a better start than they one they're currently having. The game so far has been praised for its visuals, music, and for just generally being a fun game to play, even to players who may have enjoyed a more hardcore experience offered by other titles such as the Diablo franchise. Plus, thanks to the game's randomly generated elements, it offers a unique amount of replay value where no two playthroughs are exactly alike.

Much like Animal Crossing: New HorizonsMinecraft Dungeons may be aimed at children, but there definitely is enough content and depth to it to draw in much older players, and find an incredible amount of crossover success. As stated above, players can purchase the base game Minecraft Dungeons on every major console and PC for just $19.99, or the Hero Edition for an extra $10 which will also grant them access to upcoming planned DLCs.
