Marvel's Most Horrific Weapon is One You've Never Heard Of

Warning: SPOILERS for Captain America: Marvels Snapshot

The Madbomb is Marvel Comics' most horrific weapon. Superhero comics are famous for their impossibly advanced science; genius characters like Tony Stark and Reed Richards give writers the opportunity to flex their creative muscles and explore ideas that would never work in the real world. Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic worked together to find a cure for global warming, extracting carbon dioxide from the Earth's atmosphere and dumping waste material in an artificial black hole. It's the kind of approach that could only work in comic books.

Of course, there are just as many evil scientists as there are heroic ones, and as a result comics also feature incredible weapons. Organizations like Advanced Idea Mechanics are dedicated to establishing the rule of science, believing the most intelligent people in the world are the ones with the right to rule it. They've been responsible for creating some of the most horrific weapons ever seen in comics.

The Madbomb is the most terrifying of them all. It was originally created by another terrorist group called the Royalist Forces of America, and it released sonic pulses that caused people to go insane. A Madbomb the size of a fingernail could turn everybody in a room insane; one the size of a hand grenade could turn an entire city's inhabitants against one another. This week's Captain America: Marvels Snapshot reveals just how horrific the Madbomb really is, revisiting a classic story in which one was used on New York. Everyone caught up in the blast wave was overtaken by an insatiable rage. The incident lasted only two minutes, but it it was long enough to kill thousands. Previous issues had focused only on Manhattan, but this one-shot honed in on the South Bronx. The people there were on the edge of the pulse, still affected but retaining a degree of consciousness. The starring character is Felix Waterhouse - a teenager who could only watch in horror as his little brother attacked his mother, who retaliated and hacked her child to death. It's an absolutely horrific scene.

Pandora's Box had been opened. As horrific as the Madbomb may be, its example inspired countless others to attempt to duplicate it. In a twist of fate, Felix Waterhouse wound up recruited into one AIM cell in New York who were working on a new Madbomb. "You think Cordo isn't working on a Madbomb," Waterhouse's superior asked him. "Hammer Industries? Stark? This is business. You keep up or die." Their Mindbomb was large enough to affect the entire United States.

Fortunately, Felix Waterhouse is a man with a conscience. He sabotages AIM's Madbomb, causing it to trigger an uncontrolled sonic/electromagnetic pulse. This catches the attention of Captain America the Avengers, who rush to the scene. Ironically, the pulse had shut down all AIM's technology, meaning they were completely unable to defend yourself. A nightmarish horror had been successfully averted - all thanks to an ordinary guy who wasn't willing to unleash chaos on the country.
