Keeping Up with the Kardashians star Scott Disick broke up with his girlfriend of three years Sofia Richie this month. The father of three has had his romantic relationships aired to the world via KUWTK, adding another level of difficulty to being a "normal" couple. Was it being in the spotlight that broke Scott and Sofia up? Or did his tight-knit co-parenting relationship with ex Kourtney Kardashian cause problems? Whatever the case, we take a look at why Scott Disick and Sofia Richie’s relationship was never going to work.
Following Scott and Sofia's split, reports suggested that it was Scott's relationship with Kourtney that was to blame. Scott began dating the eldest Kardashian sister in 2006 and by 2009 they had their first child together, Mason. Scott and Kourtney spent the best part of 10 years in an off-and-on relationship. For the most part, Scott's wild lifestyle of hosting and attending parties all over the world was what caused he and Kourtney's relationship to break down.
Anyone who has watched Keeping Up with the Kardashians over the years will know that Scott and Kourtney's relationship made for painful watching at points. One minute they looked like the perfect couple, canoodling and buzzing off their incredible chemistry. The next, Kourtney's in tears and Scott doesn't know right from wrong. They've broken up and got back together more times than we can remember, but after Scott flew a woman out to a family trip to Costa Rica during season 13 of KUWTK, it was the final nail in the coffin for Kourtney. Because of her relaxed approach to Scott's behavior, the mom of three described herself as "the coolest baby mama on the planet" in episode 10.
The age difference between Scott and Sofia is worth a mention. Sofia is of a similar age to Kylie Jenner, so we can assume that Scott and Sofia met through this family connection between the Kardashian-Jenners and the Richies. While couples can get on fine or even benefit from an age gap - think Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively or Hugh Jackman and Deborra Lee-Furness - Sofia being 19 and Scott being 34 at the time of getting together means that there was a 15-year age gap between the pair, and that could have caused problems.
It's no secret that both Lionel and Nicole Richie were never huge fans of Sofia going out with the Talentless founder. A report from The Daily Mail reveals how Sofia's family weren't really on-board with the idea of her dating Scott, "an insider revealed that Nicole, 38, "never fully supported" her baby sister's relationship to the much older Disick, which "played a big role in their issues." Given his bad boy reputation and stints in rehab, it's understandable to think that Lionel would want his daughter to be cautious about entering a relationship with Scott.
Besides the age gap and Sofia's family not being for the relationship, another obstacle to overcome was the fact that Scott is so close to his ex Kourtney. Scott and Kourtney are friends, as well as parents, to their three children. Given their history, they're bound to always share a close bond, but as we've seen on KUWTK, there looked to be a lot of blurred lines in Kourtney and Scott's relationship.
A quick look back at past seasons of the show and it's clear that in Scott's best moments he's trying to get it together for his children and Kourtney. At the core of a lot of his decisions to "be better" was the mother of his children. This seemed to be a thing of the past once Kourtney began dating Younes Bendjima and Scott moved on with Sofia. Even that created its fair share of drama though, season 15 episode 5 saw Scott and Younes in the same room together for the first time. When Scott introduced Sofia to the kids, Kourt ended up in floods of tears.
It's safe to say that Scott would always have a place in his heart for Kourtney and any new girlfriend is going to have a hard time integrating into their unique family set up. Naturally, Scott's family is going to be prioritized over a new girlfriend and while essentially living in the past, how could he move forward and have a future with Sofia?
Scott and Sofia's schedules could have been another factor in the pair eventually splitting. With Sofia enjoying a modelling career which has seen her pose for Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel, Michael Kors, Fendi and many more, the 21-year-old was bound to be globe-trotting for work.
Scott turned his attention to flipping houses in more recent years. With house renovation to do, as well as hosting events and filming for KUWTK, we can imagine he's a pretty busy guy. So, making time for a relationship for Scott and Sofia could've been hard.
Scott being a father means that his time is also spent with his children, Mason, Penelope and Reign. While in his younger days, when Mason and Penelope were babies, Scott still didn't seem to settle down into his parenting role, it seems that he has started to mellow at the age of 37. Scott and Kourtney have always made sure that they make memories as a family whether they're together or not. But in the midst of the Sofia breakup, Scott went on holiday to Utah with Kourtney and the kids. Anyone who's watched KUWTK when the pair holiday together as two single parents will know, they can act like they're back together in a heartbeat.
In May, Scott celebrated his 37th birthday, which, despite the coronavirus pandemic, saw the Kardashian-Jenner family reunited face-to-face to throw a party. While Scott and Sofia's breakup was news to most during this time, Khloe Kardashian took to IG to share videos of the cousins enjoying the celebrations which confirmed even more-so how Scott is a permanent fixture in the Kardashian family.
Scott's closeness with the Kardashians is understandable. He's been in their lives for around 14 years and he also doesn't have any family of his own. The 37-year-old has spent a lot of him in and out of rehab in order to get over a drinking problem. But it was the loss of his parents in 2013 and 2014 that pushed Scott into an even darker place. When Kourtney had their third child, Reign, in 2014, Scott's condition worsened and over the years he's spoken of depression and even admitted that he'd contemplated suicide. It's reported that Scott and Sofia originally went on a "break" after another stint in rehab this year. However, he could be on the mend as, during season 18 of KUWTK, Scott began speaking of his parents. He even invited a longtime family friend, who is essentially like an uncle to him, to Calabasas to look through old photographs. While his comedic demeanor and Art Vandalay pranks are entertaining, perhaps it's more important that people get to see a more serious side to Scott. The Talentless founder should take his own life more seriously. It's safe to say that given all the components of their lives, Scott and Sofia were never in for an easy ride. Let's hope that this time around, the "Lord" himself gets on the straight and narrow.
