In the Harry Potter series, after everything is over and Harry has defeated Voldemort, he grows up to have a family with Ginny. And, just like he had in his head as a teenager, he ends up having a career as an Auror, and he soon becomes Head Auror despite the fact he doesn’t technically have the official qualifications.
While Harry might have a lot of experience fighting dark magic, there are many fans who feel like Harry would have been better suited to, and happier, if he’d become a Hogwarts professor instead.
10 Professor: Hogwarts meant so much to Harry
One great argument for why Harry should have become a professor is that he loved Hogwarts so much. While in adulthood he does have a family of his own that takes the place of Hogwarts in a way, it will always still be a place that meant a lot to him.
It’s easy to imagine Harry wanting to spend more time there and make it a great place for new generations of students.
9 Auror: He had a natural gift for defense against the dark arts
From a young age, even as an eleven-year-old, Harry Had a natural knack for Defense Against the Dark Arts. While Hermione might have been the best in almost every other subject, Harry was usually the best in his year at Defense Against the Dark Arts.
These spells came easily to him, so it makes sense he would make something he’s so good at into a career and become an Auror.
8 Professor: It’s a much safer profession for a father
It’s not super clear how, or if it’s possible, to be a parent and become a professor at Hogwarts. But, given how easy it should be to Apparate, it should be possible.
Being an Auror, on the other hand, is an inherently dangerous profession. As someone who is in charge of finding and arresting dark magic users, Harry would always be at risk.
7 Auror: He would likely get restless if he wasn’t on the move
Being a professor would be a much more stable career and also safer, but Harry does have a bit of a reckless side and is someone who needs to always be doing something. He prides himself on being brave and courageous, so he might think he needs to do something more direct to change the world.
While being a professor is a very important job, Harry might get restless spending his time behind a desk instead of being on the ground.
6 Professor: He wasn’t really a rule follower
As an Auror, Harry would have been in charge of enforcing many rules and laws. While Harry Does care a lot about fighting against bigotry and dark magic, he doesn’t actually follow rules very well.
So, it’s hard to imagine him sticking to the laws and structure of being a Auror in a professional setting.
5 Auror: He always really looked up to Aurors
Many people in Harry’s life that he admired were people who fought against dark magic. And some of these people, like Tonks and Mad-Eye Moody, were officially Aurors.
Others were people who were members of the Order of the Phoenix, like his parents and Sirius. Clearly, he saw these people as the most admirable, and so it’s no surprise he wanted to be like them.
4 Professor: Because he thrived when teaching Dumbledore’s Army
One of the main things fans point to when they talk about why Harry should have been a professor is how he was a really good teacher. There are many times where he teaches his fellow students.
While this is particularly true while teaching Dumbledore’s Army, he also often helped Hermione and Ron. He really seemed to enjoy teaching and helping others learn.
3 Auror: He felt like it’s what he was called to do
There are many things about being an Auror that might not have been perfect for Harry, but the fact is that he always had his sights on this profession.
While teenagers often change their minds about their careers once they reach adulthood, Harry was a person who cared a lot about his convictions, so it makes sense that once he got the idea into his head that he went ahead with it.
2 Professor: He had already spent so much of his life fighting dark wizards
There’s no doubt that Harry would have made an extremely skilled Auror, but it’s also hard to see why he would want to be one.
His entire childhood and young adult life was filled with a lot of trauma, and fighting a battle against Voldemort he shouldn’t have had to fight. He did more than his fair share, and continuing to do that for the rest of his adult life seems psychologically and emotionally unsustainable.
1 Auror: Because he had more experience than anyone
While Harry definitely deserved a rest from fighting against dark lords and their followers, the truth is that he did have more experience than almost anyone else considering his young age.
This, combined with his natural skill and insistence on never backing down, would have made him great in his role as Auror.
