Gran Turismo PS5 Game Trademarked Before Reveal Event Was Cancelled

Sony filed new trademarks and logos for Gran Turismo right before the original date of their PlayStation 5 showcase, providing more evidence that Gran Turismo 7 is on the way. Gran Turismo is a long-running franchise of racing simulation games that focus on realism and licensed vehicles. The series has had a release on every PlayStation branded console except the Vita, making it the most popular PlayStation-exclusive franchise of all time. GT games are so realistic that they have been used to scout and develop drivers who have gone on to compete in real life races.

The PlayStation 4 did not receive a numbered release in the Gran Turismo series, instead getting the multiplayer-focused Gran Turismo Sport. Developer Polyphony Digital have previously discussed the future of the series, targeting 240fps on the new console generation, a lofty target to say the least. A few weeks ago, it seemed as if the game had been leaked by a gaming cockpit manufacturer, who later admitted to using a fake Gran Turismo 7 logo to market the product. However, some trademarks filed earlier this month still point to an imminent release in the franchise.

As reported by TweakTown, Sony updated their trademarks for both "Gran Turismo" and the traditional series logo on June 3rd, one day before the PS5 games showcase was supposed to air before it was delayed to respect the Black Lives Matter protests. While no new logos or titles were found to be trademarked, the timing of the filing would suggest that something Gran Turismo-related was planned to be shown at the games showcase, which has since been moved to June 11th.

There's little doubt that a Gran Turismo game will release on the PlayStation 5 at some point considering the franchise is a PlayStation stalwart and the console line's best-selling name. What would be significant news however - and, given recent leaks and rumors, could be possible - is the announcement of Gran Turismo 7 (or perhaps Gran Turismo Sport 2, or something else entirely) as a PlayStation 5 launch title. Since Polyphony Digital have already discussed their advancements in frame rate and resolution, it's entirely plausible that the next Gran Turismo release will come early into the PS5's life cycle - or even on its launch day.

Many PlayStation 4 favorites are likely to receive sequels and remasters on Sony's next console, with rumors already swirling about a Bloodborne remaster and PC port and the possibly upcoming reveal of Horizon: Zero Dawn 2, a sequel to one of the PS4's best exclusives. If these leaks and rumors pan out in actual reveals, expect some word about Gran Turismo 7 or something similar racing onto the PS5 games showcase this Thursday.
