Friends: 5 Times Monica Was An Overrated Character (& 5 She Was Underrated)

One of the most iconic sitcoms ever, Friends wouldn't be the same without neat freak Monica Geller (Courteney Cox). She may be a little irritating at times, but for the most part, she has a good heart, she's determined to be a good friend, and she just wants to find love and happiness. Isn't that what everyone wants, after all?

Along with her best pals Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), and her brother Ross (David Schwimmer), Monica has a lot of big moments on the sitcom. But not all of them deserve the praise that they get. Here are Monica's most overrated and underrated moments.

10 Overrated: She And Chandler Pretend That They Won't Keep Dating

It's definitely a big deal with Monica and Chandler hook up at Ross' wedding, and fans still consider this one of the most crucial storylines in Friends history.

But when these two characters pretend that they won't keep dating, it's not really that dramatic or interesting. Why? Because everyone knows that they will and that they've already fallen in love. They can claim that they will only hook up in London, not New York, but everyone knows the truth.

9 Underrated: Understands She And Richard Are At Different Life Stages

Monica's relationship with Richard (Tom Selleck) is a lot more interesting than people give it credit for. Sure, everyone focuses on her love story with Chandler, but Monica has one of her most underrated moments with Richard.

When he breaks up with her, she understands that they're at different life stages since he doesn't want to start a family and she wants children. This is a mature storyline that isn't often explored on light-hearted shows like Friends.

8 Overrated: Season 9's Pregnancy Storyline

Did any Friends fan think that Monica and Chandler wouldn't become parents, one way or another? It was always clear that they would get their happily ever after, and that would involve having kids someday.

That's why it's definitely overrated when so much time is spent on Monica's trouble getting pregnant in the ninth season. It doesn't have a huge impact because fans know that she will become a mom at some point.

7 Underrated: Tries To Be Pals With Julie

It's really amazing that Monica tries to be pals with Julie (Lauren Tom) as most people would side with Rachel, not wanting to upset their best friend.

But Monica shows a maturity that she doesn't always possess. She wants to be there for her brother and it's very sweet to see.

6 Overrated: She And Chandler Are Discovered By Joey

When Joey discovers that his two pals are actually in love, it's supposed to be a huge moment, one of the biggest of the show.

It seems pretty overrated, though, because from the minute that Monica and Chandler started hooking up, it was obvious that they would be found out in a hilarious way. This is a sitcom we're talking about. And since everyone finds out separately and it's a whole drawn-out storyline, it doesn't pack quite the punch that it's meant to. It would have been better if everyone found out at once.

5 Underrated: Has A Dirty Closet Packed Full Of Stuff

When it turns out that she has a dirty closet packed full of stuff, it's a hilarious Monica moment that seems to come and go way too easily. This is one of her most underrated scenes as it could honestly be mentioned in every single episode and it wouldn't feel like too much.

Whether cleaning her apartment obsessively or commenting on how messy other people are being, Monica is the biggest neat freak that Friends fans know, so this was one of her best moments.

4 Overrated: She And Chandler Want To Live Together In Season 6

In the sixth season, Monica and Chandler want to live together, and this makes for one of her most overrated moments.

It means that Rachel is out of an apartment and has to shack up with Phoebe, which is supposed to be a huge deal because Rachel and Monica have been roommates since forever (or since the beginning of the show). But isn't this something that Rachel and Monica should have discussed earlier? Isn't it obvious that Monica and Chandler would want to live together after getting so serious?

3 Underrated: Opens Her Wedding Gifts Without Chandler

In the season 8 episode "The One with the Red Sweater," Monica decides to open all of her wedding gifts without Chandler.

This is a hilarious moment that is one of Monica's bests. It may seem small, but it sums up so much about how even though she's embarking on this new life, she can't help who she is.

2 Overrated: Choosing Between Richard And Chandler

Did anyone really think that Monica would choose Richard in the sixth season? The show acts like she's making this huge decision between who she should be with, but fans already know that Chandler is going to ask her to marry him, and these two are definitely endgame.

Richard and Monica broke up because of the kids issue, and she would never go back on tha, as she definitely wants to be a mom.

1 Underrated: Tells Chandler He Could Never Be Her Boyfriend

In some fantastic foreshadowing, Chandler tells Monica that he could be her boyfriend in the third season. She responds that he's "Chandler" and not "boyfriend material."

This is a much bigger moment than it seems to be at the time, as fans can look back and realize that this would not only predict their romance, but the fact that Monica isn't sure that Chandler really can commit to her at first.
