Disney+'s Artemis Fowl Gets Terrible Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Score

The reviews are in for Disney+'s adaptation of Artemis Fowl, and unfortunately, the news isn't very encouraging. The adaptation was originally set to hit theaters in August 2019 but was pushed to May 2020. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the studio decided to release the film on Disney+ instead, skipping a theatrical release altogether. Heading into its release, Artemis Fowl has received a heavy amount of backlash from its trailers, with fans expressing their dissatisfaction with how the source material was being treated.

Artemis Fowl is based on a series of beloved novels from author Eoin Colfer. The series follows the story of a young, wealthy genius, who stumbles upon the secret of a race of fairies living under the Earth's surface and decides to exploit the discovery for profit. The adaptation of the beloved story is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Colin Farrell, Nonso Anozie, and Judi Dench. Due to the series' overwhelming popularity, an adaptation has been in the works for years, but encountered a myriad of roadblocks and remained in development purgatory for years until Disney stepped in.

The review site Rotten Tomatoes has released the Tomatometer score for Artemis Fowl, which sits at an underwhelming 15 percent with 47 critic reviews tallied thus far. Since posting their tweet, the film now resides at an even lower 13 percent, with 52 reviews now included. The full tweet and a sampling of what critics have said are below.

Los Angeles Times:

"Anyone looking for entertaining young-adult fantasy adventure might as well move along. There's nothing to see here."

MovieWeb:

"Artemis Fowl has a high production value, but fails to captivate in any meaningful way. The characters are clunky, poorly written, and devoid of chemistry."

The Wrap:

"Artemis Fowl" is trying to be something very different - bigger, beefier, flashier and not as magical. You can't really blame it for aiming lower, but there's enough tantalizing promise here to wish that it didn't."

The New York Times:

"Once a portrayer of Hamlet's antic disposition, Branagh has made a movie that is simply antic."

San Francisco Chronicle:

"It's an OK version of the thing it is. I just can't stand the thing it is."

The film adaptation has made some notable changes to the source material. For example, Judi Dench is playing Commander Root, who is a male character in the source material and is the leader of the Lower Elements Police recon unit. Secondly, the more significant change made is how the character of Artemis Fowl is being treated. In the book series, the character is portrayed mainly as a merciless antihero, while in the Artemis Fowl trailer, he appears to be depicted as a blatant hero, who helps protect the world from ancient, fantastical threats. Naturally, fans of the novels haven't been thrilled with these changes.

It's easy to see why fans have been so apprehensive about this adaptation from Disney. The outrage stemmed from each trailer that was released for the film and the overwhelmingly negative reviews won't do much to assuage the fears of the series' most passionate fans. Though the film has a talented director in Branagh at the helm, the trailers for the film have been underwhelming at the very least, showcasing an adaptation that looks like a watered-down hybrid of Harry Potter and Men In Black. Though these reviews may be disappointing for fans of the series to read, they can form their own opinions of the film when it hits Disney+. Artemis Fowl debuts on Disney+ June 12th.
