Some of the most memorable episodes of Community were the show's action-packed paintball episodes. Due to the reception of the first episode to feature a game of paintball, creator Dan Harmon and the rest of the writers decided to keep the concept going. It was a thrilling way to push aside normal campus life and throw the study group into a suspenseful situation.
The tournament, known as Paintball Assassin, was an annual campus-wide competition held toward the end of the school year at Greendale Community College. Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) organized the event as a way for students to let off some steam as they were allowed to run around with paintball guns. Jeff (Joel McHale), Annie (Alison Brie), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), Troy (Donald Glover), Abed (Danny Pudi), Britta (Gillian Jacobs), and Pierce (Chevy Chase) were participators, as were the rest of the students. The fact that a prize was available also helped increase interest.
The intense game of paintball became a running gag on Community, and out of the show's six seasons, some form of paintball was featured in all by one season. Here's every episode of paintball, including those that reference past tournaments.
The first game of Paintball Assassin was introduced in Community season 1. Dean Pelton announced the game with a prize to be determined later. Jeff was uninterested in the idea and decided to take a nap in his car. Upon waking up, he found that the entire student body decided to participate and the campus was a warzone. Jeff decided to play when he found the prize was Priority registration. In the end, Jeff, Britta, and Ben (Ken Jeong) were the only ones left. Britta and Ben took each other out of the game during a one-on-one duel, so Jeff won as the last man standing.
Community season 2 ended with a two-part finale centered on the annual game of Paintball Assassin. The episodes, notably directed by Joe Russo, were inspired by a spaghetti western. This time around, the game was western themed and sponsored by Pistol Patty's Cowboy Creamery; $100,000 dollars was up for grabs, so the entire campus participated while destroying the campus in the process. The real sponsor turned out to be rival City College in the hope that Greendale would destroy their own school. Pierce wound up winning and gave the prize money back to Greendale.
Rather than presenting an episode dedicated to the game of paintball, Community season 3 featured a flashback to another campus-wide contest. While Abed visited a psychologist, the flashback of his past year revealed that Greendale hosted a noir themed game of Paintball Assassin. It was unclear who won the match but the prize was tickets to the musical "Chicago" at Greendale Civic Center.
The following season also didn't include a traditional game of Paintball Assassin. Instead, Jeff was set to graduate early and he worried about leaving the study group. Those fears led to an intense daydream that featured the Evil Study Group from the Darkest Timeline targeting their real-life counterparts. The two groups engaged in a paintball fight before Jeff snapped out of the daydream.
Community season 6 featured one last game of paintball. The annual Paintball Assassin match had been banned on campus by the school but there were rumors of an underground paintball tournament. Jeff led the investigation into who was orchestrating the game and found that City College was once again behind it - but most of the campus was secretly participating. The conflict spilled out at a tie gala with Jeff, Dean Pelton, and the head custodian (Kumail Nanjiani) left standing. They all shot each other at the same time, so all were disqualified.
