Artemis Fowl 2: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant

Here's everything we know about Disney's Artemis Fowl 2. Based on Eoin Colfer's novel series of the same name, Artemis Fowl released in June 2020 on Disney+ and has been widely panned by audiences and critics alike.

Disney's version of Artemis Fowl has been criticized for changes to the source material, and for lacking the necessary energy to fuel a a movie franchise. The first movie follows the eponymous title character, a 12-year-old "criminal mastermind" who's looking for his long-lost father and attempts to prevent an underground rebellion led by fairies. Ferdia Shaw stars as Artemis Fowl in the Disney+ adaptation, with Judi Dench, Josh Gad, and Colin Farrell in supporting roles.

Artemis Fowl chronicles a chase for the "Aculos" - a powerful object that can either help Artemis II find his father, Artemis I (Farrell), or allow the fairy kingdom to rise up and take control. The story is driven by the backstory of recon officer Holly Short (Lara McDonnell), the motivations of a dwarf thief named Mulch Diggums (Gad), and whether or not Artemis has the intelligence to defeat his enemies. Here's what we expect for Artemis Fowl 2 on Disney+.

The Artemis Fowl book franchise consists of eight novels, released between 2001 and 2012, along with a spinoff series call The Fowl Twins (released in 2019). So, if Disney wants to adapt more of Colfer's work, there's certainly potential for a major movie franchise. The big problem, however, is that Branagh's Disney+ adaptation has received harsh reviews, with many critics questioning the series' long-term viability. As of now, Disney+ hasn't greenlit Artemis Fowl 2, and probably won't for several months. Given the current COVID-19 situation, it's more than possible that an official decision won't even be announced in 2020, as Disney will want to assess streaming numbers throughout the year. After all, Artemis Fowl may prove to be a streaming hit, even if critics aren't impressed with the filmmaking.

It's plausible that Disney+ could pump out a new Artemis Fowl movie every two years. All of the big names are supporting players rather than leads, and the young performers will want the exposure to boost their careers. Now that Hollywood productions are resuming, it's safe to say that filming for Artemis Fowl 2 could begin in 2021, assuming that Disney wants to move forward. For context, the Harry Potter movie franchise consists of eight movies that were released between 2001 and 2011. Expect Artemis Fowl 2 to release in 2022, if it's a film that Disney wants.

Artemis Fowl ends with the title character saving the day, thanks to the assistance of Holly and Mulch. In addition, Artemis is reunited with his father, which means that Artemis Fowl 2 will presumably follow the source material's storyline and have the gang squaring off against Opal Koboi and Briar Cudgeon from Artemis Fowl and the Arctic Incident. With that said, Disney may choose to switch things up based on reactions to the first movie. Still, the basic premise will likely remain the same. The problem, it seems, appears to be the script and the collective performances overall. Artemis Fowl was produced for a whopping $125 million, so it makes sense to enlist a screenwriter, or screenwriters, who can keep Disney+ subscribers entertained.
