10 Things Everyone Missed About Kyle From Parks And Rec

Parks and Recreation is an evergreen show which made fans cry when the show aired its finale. It stirred the same emotions when the Parks and Rec special reunion episode aired just recently. However, the characters of Jerry and Kyle were literally just a punching bag for everyone in the show.

If anybody else had replaced Kyle's actor, fans of the show would have long forgotten Kyle, but Andy Forrest's acting was so strong and on point, that fans still reminisce about Kyle and rant on online forums about how poorly he was treated. Whatever is the case, Kyle is an unforgettable character in the show for sure. Let’s discuss Kyle in detail some more!

10 Original Script

It is surprising, but, originally the character of Kyle was only written for a few episodes. Kyle appears in almost all Andy’s scenes at the shoe shine stand and is a very regular character on the show.

In one of the original versions of the script, Kyle was intended to be the Head of Pawnee's department of Water and Power. But, that was changed in the final script and it was never mentioned again, as the actor Andy Forrest recalled in an interview.

9 Whipping Boy

Kyle's character was changed to be an attorney who continued to visit the shoe shine stand of fan favorite Andy Dwyer. Andy mostly treated him as his scapegoat or whipping boy if you will. The writers treated Kyle's character just the same. Kyle was written as a one-off character earlier, but, the writers felt that they needed someone to be the scapegoat to be at the shoe stand, to build up the jokes and hence, Kyle became a regular thing.

8 Most Poorly Treated Employee

Most feel that Jerry was treated very poorly by everyone at the Pawnee’s government office, but, there is one more character fans often forget about. That is Kyle. Kyle was the most miserably treated, even worse than Jerry. Even Jerry belittled him on multiple occasions.

7 Age

Kyle is one character who despite being a steady and regular character on the show never got his own storyline or even one subplot. He often was shown as a backdrop, a silent observer or the recipient of Andy’s daily quirks and antics. But, we know his age. He is mentioned to be 59 years old.

6 First Appearance

Kyle appeared in the episode “The Camel” for the very first time. The Camel is the episode 9 in the second season. This is right when Andy opened his shoe shine stand counter in the hallways of the Pawnee office.

Apart from Kyle, the stand up comedian Kirk Fox made a guest appearance for the first time in this hilarious episode.

5 Character Arc

Kyle's character was improvised (by the writers) with the overall flow of the main storyline without so much as an actual storyline. He started off as a City Attorney Assistant and kept up with the usual one or two appearances every episode until the finale.

His character never really grew or developed and sort of worked as a filler and yet, fans still remember Kyle from the show just because of the actor’s astounding performance.

4 A Finished Job

Kyle never really got a full shoe polish throughout all the seasons in the series. For the first time when he appeared at the shine stand (and the show), Ron cut in line and Andy kicked him out before throwing his suitcase on the floor.

Not only this, when Kyle waited for Ron to finish and came again, Andy threw his bag again on the suitcase and dismissed him rudely. It's actually really sad to see Kyle treated much poorly than Jerry/Terry/Gary.

3 Real Jerry Of Pawnee

Jerry is the subject of constant taunts, sarcasm and continuous pickings, even by Leslie. But Kyle has it even worse. He is always bullied by Andy despite the fact that Kyle was a regular client of the shoe shine stand and paid him decent money. Whenever Ron visited the stand, Andy used to kick him off the high chair without finishing the job and most often accompanied with belittling comments. Kyle is the real punching bag of the whole Pawnee.

2 General Trivia

Kyle is the deadpan guy of the show Parks and Rec, mostly limited to observing what was happening around. His only job was either to be the worst (even worse than Gary/Jerry) or to serve as a filler and build up the humor.

The actor Andy Forrest said he stayed on because of Chris Pratt who helped him a lot with the character.

1 Last Appearance

In spite of not having a fully stretched role (or even a quarter, for that matter), Kyle still appeared regularly throughout the series. He appeared for the last time in the show in the 12th episode of the 7th season, which was also the finale episode, as his usual self, on the weirdest floor of the whole department, the fourth floor. Interestingly, in his last moments on the show, April referenced to Kyle as the creepy people, without any obvious reasons!
