Star Wars: 5 Reasons Why Clone Wars Had The Best Finale (& 5 Why It Was Rebels)

The animated shows of Star Wars have been two of the best pieces of Star Wars content of all time, with the final season of The Clone Wars and the entirety of Rebels being two of the best parts of the new Disney era of Star Wars.

The end of The Clone Wars with the Siege of Mandalore had the fandom at perhaps its most united in years and delivered on every level. However, the Rebels finale was also pretty phenomenal, and it is hard to find any real flaws in "Family Reunion - and Farewell."

9 Family Reunion - And Farewell - Leads Perfectly Into A Sequel

The ending of the finale in terms of Ezra and Thrawn leads them away to a mysterious place by way of the Purrgils. We then later see Ahsoka and Sabine, and they seem ready to look for Ezra.

This leads perfectly into a sequel series as it wraps up the story of Rebels itself, moves the timeline to a new era, and presents more grown-up characters and a new story. The Siege of Mandalore does lead to new stories, but not really a sequel or new Clone Wars series.

8 Siege Of Mandalore - The Final Shot & Scene

The entire final two scenes, first with Ahsoka and Rex burying the clones and faking their deaths, then second with Vader, are harrowing and beautiful.

The final shot of Rebels is excellent, but the image of Vader in the helmet of a clone with Ahsoka paint literally brings together the three main aspects of the show, wrapped together in a painfully gorgeous package.

7 Family Reunion - And Farewell - Remains Grounded In The Goal Of Rebels

One of the great things about Rebels and its finale is that it remains focused on its goals of liberating Lothal, and while the end does go into stuff like the Emperor, etc., it remains grounded in that goal.

It is not a bad thing that the Siege of Mandalore focuses on the Siege, Order 66, and the journey of the characters, etc. it is one of the things that make it so great, but the heart and goals of the rebels in Rebels deserve some commendation.

6 Siege Of Mandalore - Production

The production value in terms of animation, music, writing, performances, etc. is all fantastic in the finale of Rebels, but what happens in the Siege of Mandalore is the next level.

Filoni and company's storytelling goes without saying, and the performances from Sam Witwer, Ashley Eckstein, Dee Bradley Baker, Katee Sackhoff, etc. are wonderful. The animation in the entire season is the best it has ever been in Star Wars, and the unsung hero of it all, Kevin Kiner's music is unbelievable, in both finales, but especially the Siege of Mandalore.

5 Family Reunion - And Farewell - Natural Conclusion Of The Season

Season four of Rebels was consistently fantastic and brought the Ghost crew to the point where they had to focus on Lothal and end the Empire's reign there.

This comes in "Family Reunion - And Farewell." While The Clone Wars season seven was split up in arcs that had some connectivity with Bo-Katan coming to Ahsoka at the end of the Martez sisters arc, it is nowhere near that of Rebels, which builds and builds to that point through the season with the story, not just anticipation.

4 Siege Of Mandalore - Natural Conclusion Of The Series

What the Siege of Mandalore is, though, is the natural and best possible conclusion to The Clone Wars as a series.

Not only was the famous Siege of Mandalore event itself a great conclusion place, but Order 66 was perfect, it was the end of the Clone War itself and seeing the events of Revenge Of The Sith from another vantage point was terrific.

3 Family Reunion - And Farewell - A Better Season Behind It

Season four of Rebels did have a couple of filler episodes, but as a whole, the season was fantastic with some of Star Wars' best stuff like "Twin Suns," "World Between Worlds," and "Jedi Night."

The Bad Batch arc of season seven in The Clone Wars was great, but the Martez sisters arc did lack at a lot of points despite being essential to Ahsoka's journey. The Siege of Mandalore is perfect, but the stuff behind it was not as good as what was in Rebels.

2 Siege Of Mandalore - Action & Emotion

"Family Reunion - And Farewell" is a very emotional episode, especially for big fans of the characters, etc. and it is also full of some good action. But not like the Siege of Mandalore.

The lightsaber duel between Maul and Ahsoka tops any action in the Rebels finale, and the opening to the arc with Obi-Wan and Anakin is also fantastic alongside the battle of the Siege, and everything involving the clones, Maul, Ahsoka and Order 66. The emotion goes without saying, everything that happened across the four was pretty devastating in one way or another.

The finale of The Clone Wars leaves a few character questions in terms of where they are and what they are doing, like Maul, Ahsoka, Rex, Gregor, and Wolffe. We know what eventually happens to them by way of the Ahsoka novel, Rebels, and Solo, but where do they go from the finale?

What Rebels does is spell out for the audience what happens to the main characters after the events of the finale, following each member of the Ghost crew and what they are doing, without the exception of Ezra, of course.

1 Siege Of Mandalore - It Is A Movie That Has Surpassed All Other Arcs

The Siege of Mandalore is pretty much just a two-hour movie split into four parts, and that is a lot of pressure. Nevertheless, the arc delivered and has surpassed all other arcs in animation.

There are obviously arguments for a couple of other arcs, and maybe even episodes like "Twilight of the Apprentice" can be compared to singular episodes of the arc. But as a whole, nothing touches the overall quality of the arc, a perfect finale.
