PLL: 10 Relationship Mistakes The Characters Made | ScreenRant

A big part of Pretty Little Liars was the relationships; there were families, friends, enemies, and lovers who showed off on this television series, which added to the drama and interest of the story. And while the romantic relationships were usually steamy and juicy, there were definitely some bumps in the road over the years.

In fact, the 10 mistakes that are listed out down below are just a few of the major ones that stand out, after all this time. They were made by the main characters, and they put a damper on things. And they may have made fans feel better about any hiccups in their love lives, too.

10 Lying To Significant Others

As the title suggested, this show was full of lies and secrets, and at times, Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily had to keep the truth from their loved ones. While it is understandable that A was a threat and that these girls were just trying to do the right thing, there were plenty of times when this backfired.

Aria didn’t tell Ezra that he had a call from Nicole. Emily fibbed to Sabrina, which upset her. And true feelings were held back more than once, causing delays in happily ever afters.

9 And Keeping Big Secrets From Them

Telling a fib and withholding the truth are both forms of lying, and it should be noted that the girls were not the only ones guilty of this. The men of PLL told their fair share of lies, too, especially Ezra; he knew Ali, wrote a book about her, and decided not to tell Aria any of that.

When she found out, she was beyond hurt, in a scene that featured that iconic crying face. This was one of the many low points in this relationship, but it luckily did not ruin their chance of being together forever.

8 Stealing Other People’s Men

Rosewood was a small town, but there is a girl code: Do not date, kiss, hook up with, or flirt with a friend’s ex or a sibling’s ex. However, the main characters on PLL either didn’t know this rule or chose to ignore it.

Spencer was guiltier than the rest in this area, as she had moments with two of Melissa’s men (Ian and Wren) and dated Caleb later in the show.

7 Sneaking Around Behind A Boyfriend’s Back

Just as these little liars kept the truth from their boyfriends and girlfriends, they also snuck around all the time. After all, there was always some A-related mission to tackle!

That being said, these friends had to make up excuses for where they were and what they were doing, and this sometimes led to arguments or breakups. For instance, when Ali stole Lorenzo’s key card, he was not thrilled, to say the least.

6 Kissing The Love Of Your Life’s Sibling

As mentioned, several of these characters had romantic moments with people their friends or siblings had dated or loved. Aria took things in a new direction by kissing Ezra’s brother, Wesley.

Over the years, Ezria had tons of struggles, but they overcame them all. Luckily, this random storyline was short-lived and did not stand in the way of an eventual wedding.

5 Being Someone You’re Not To Impress A Boy/Girl

Due to all the lying, Spencer, Aria, Hanna and Emily sometimes pretended they were someone else. At times, this was a defense mechanism, and at other times, it was done to try and impress a certain boy or girl.

For example, Hanna was set on going all the way with Sean. She had totally transformed herself, thinking that he would never be able to resist the prettiest and most popular girl in school. That was a tough moment, but she certainly got cheered up later by Caleb!

4 Falling Too Fast For The Wrong Type

On a similar note, there were times when characters fell fast and hard for the wrong person. Not every relationship is meant to be, but some real red flags were ignored.

Emily was attracted to Sara, who ended up being bad news, and she dated Paige, a girl who once tried to drown her. And Ali thought Archer was great but quickly found out so many horrible secrets about the man.

3 Messing With Fate

It was pretty clear that Aria and Ezra, Hanna and Caleb, Spencer and Toby and Emily and Alison would end up together; they had all gone through too much and seemed like perfect fits for that not to happen!

Still, it seemed these girls were just testing fate at times. Aria moved away and got with Liam. Hanna and Caleb had a huge fight, leading to her engagement with Jordan, and after Spoby’s broke up, Yvonne came into the picture.

2 Ending Up In A Failed Marriage

While a failed marriage isn’t necessarily a mistake, every single time, this has to be mentioned… Alison and Emily did have twin girls together, and Emily accepted when Ali proposed; these two finally seemed happy.

However, in Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, everyone found out that the relationship did not work out after all. No details were given, and maybe it was for the best, but one can’t help but wonder what mistakes were made by these two women.

1 And, Of Course, Spencer Dating Caleb

This list would not be complete without touching upon Spencer dating Caleb. It was already established that Spence enjoyed shopping out of other people's carts, but this was too much. Yes, Hanna and Caleb were broken up. Yes, Toby had seemed to move on. And yes, Hanna gave them permission.

It was clear, though, that seeing Spencer and Caleb together hurt Hanna, just as it was clear that Haleb would be the end game, no matter what!
