10 Kate Was Intended To Be The Leader Of The Survivors
Jack was originally supposed to die in the pilot episode. After his death, Kate was supposed to take over as the leader of the survivors.
This was ultimately changed because the writers were concerned that the audience would feel angered and betrayed by Jack's death. It would've been shocking, but some fans wouldn't like to see Jack die just as they were getting invested in his character. Jack remained the star of the show and Kate never became the primary leader of the survivors.
9 Her Original Backstory Was Given To Rose
Kate's original backstory was quite different from the one she was ultimately given. She was supposed to be an older woman who was separated from her husband during the plane crash.
This backstory still exists in the show, but it was given to Rose instead. In season 1, Rose kept insisting her husband wasn't dead. It wasn't until season 2 that the tail section survivors were introduced, and one of them turned out to be her husband, Bernard.
8 The Toy Plane Was In Safety Deposit Box 815
One of the first Kate-centric episodes featured flashbacks during which she robbed a bank. It turned out the robbery wasn't about money, but was about getting access to a safety deposit box that contained a toy plane. The toy plane had once been part of a time capsule that Kate buried with her childhood best friend Tom Brennan.
What some fans may not have noticed is that the safety deposit box number is 815. This should ring a bell because of Oceanic 815, along with 8 and 15 being among the recurring numbers in the show.
7 Yunjin Kim Auditioned To Play Kate
Yunjim Kim is known for playing the character of Sun. What many fans don't know is that she originally auditioned to play the role of Kate.
While the role went to Evangeline Lilly, the producers loved her audition so much that they ended up creating the characters of Sun and Jin so she could still be part of the show. Given how important Sun and Jin ended up being, it's fascinating to consider that there was almost a version of the show that didn't include them.

Much of Kate's backstory revolved around her being a fugitive on the run. Like any individual who is deemed a criminal, Kate had a mugshot.
The subject file of Kate's mugshot is 00-0428-23-5607-01. This was another opportunity to include the show's infamous numbers as 4, 8, 23, and 42 are all included, with only 15 and 16 missing.
5 Why Kate Climbed Trees So Much
Kate is frequently seen climbing trees during her time on the Island. After the "Jughead" bomb was detonated at the end of season 5, she even woke up in a tree when she returned to the present in the season 6 premiere.
While these scenes served a purpose in the story, it is also because actress Evangeline Lilly is athletic and loves to climb trees herself.
4 The Sabrina The Teenage Witch Reference
As a fugitive on the run, Kate used many aliases. In the episode "Born to Run" she used the alias Joan Hart. This is a reference to Melissa Joan Hart, who was the star of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

It is significant that Kate used the Joan Hart alias in "Born to Run" because it is the episode where she tried to visit her mother in the hospital. Kate's mother was played Beth Broderick, who played the important role of Aunt Zelda in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
3 Kate Appeared In 108 Episodes
It's impressive to appear in 108 out of the show's 121 total episodes, but the number 108 has additional significance in Lost. The recurring numbers in the show were 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42, the total sum of which is 108.
108 is also what the clock in the Swan station resets to each time the button is pushed. 108 days also passed between the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 and the day that the Oceanic 6 returned to civilization. Kate appearing in 108 episodes is probably a happy accident, but one that feels appropriate for the show.
2 She Has The Second-Most Flashbacks In The Show
Lost had a consistent format of focusing on character-centric episodes. These episodes featured a past and present storyline, both of which were interwoven together to tell a larger story. As the seasons progressed, the show introduced flash forwards and the flash sideways to spice up this format.
By the end of the series, only Jack ended up having more flashbacks than Kate. The many Kate-centric episodes and the flashbacks they included helped make her a particularly well-developed character.
1 Kate Is The Only Oceanic 6 Member To Escape The Island Twice
The Oceanic 815 passengers were presumed dead, but that changed when Kate, Jack, Sayid, Hurley, Sun, and Aaron returned to civilization. Kate and the others became known as the Oceanic 6.
Eventually, all of the Oceanic 6--except Aaron--would return to the Island. Kate was the only member of the group to escape the Island again, this time via Ajira Flight 316. The only other character to escape the Island twice in the show is pilot Frank Lapidus.
