Is Elsa In Love With Jack Frost? Frozen Theory Explained

A crazy Frozen fan theory suggests that Elsa is in love with Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians; however, this star-crossed romance could not possibly be true. The theory has been circulating online for years, and while it continues to make the rounds to this day, there isn't enough evidence to support it. Furthermore, there is one key issue that almost guarantees audiences won't see Elsa and Jack Frost meet, let along get together, anytime soon.

Elsa's lack of a love interest is unusual for a Disney heroine. Although Elsa is not an official Disney princess, the majority of Disney princess movies revolve around the main character finding her one true love in the end. That happened for Elsa's sister Anna, but never for Elsa herself. For that reason, Elsa's love life has been the focus of a few Frozen fan theories, whether it be that Elsa is the first openly gay princess or, in this case, that she's in love with Jack Frost.

Frozen fans should not expect any revelations about Elsa's love life in a potential third movie. The idea of the "Ice Queen" getting together with Jack Frost is out of the question. The pairing would completely go against Elsa's multi-movie arc, and it depends on Disney making a creative choice that would never happen. Those perpetuating the theory need to finally let it go.

Frozen fans have been rooting for Elsa to find love ever since the first film came out in 2013. There's a strong base hoping for Disney to reveal that Elsa is gay, but there are also plenty of fans who want to see Elsa and Jack Frost together. On paper, Elsa and Rise of the Guardians' Jack Frost seem like a perfect fit — they have similar looks and both have ice-based powers. The internet is littered with videos and fan fiction that chronicles their love story all the way to marriage and kids. Yet, the relationship between Jack Frost and Elsa will likely always just remain wishful thinking.

There are two large obstacles standing in the way of a Jack Frost and Elsa relationship in the next Frozen movie. First off, the character of Jack Frost is owned by Dreamworks, whereas Elsa is owned by Disney. Two different studios means that a crossover would be highly unlikely. Secondly, even if Disney chose to circumvent the rights issue by using a different version of Jack Frost, putting Elsa in a relationship — particularly with a male character with similar, if not more powerful, abilities — goes against what the franchise stands for thematically. The Frozen movies are about self-discovery, sisterhood, and female empowerment. Elsa marrying a mythical spirit with the same powerset would certainly eclipse her own role in the universe.

One reason that audiences were immediately drawn to Frozen was that it mainly focused on two kinds of love stories that are not typically highlighted in Disney films. The first is that of sisterly love between sister duo Anna and Elsa. The second is Elsa's journey of self-love. At the beginning of Frozen, she is ashamed of her powers, but she learns to embrace them and love who she is. That self-love is more important than a romantic relationship she could have with any man or woman, and her journey of self-discovery continued to drive the plot of Frozen 2. So, if the team behind Frozen gave in to the fan theories and paired up Elsa and Jack Frost in a relationship in a potential third Frozen movie, that would completely contradict the journey Elsa has been on for two movies. It might be a letdown for some fans to hear that Elsa is not in love with Jack Frost, but it benefits the Frozen series in the long run.
