Henry Cavill Brings Back Justice League Mustache To Announce Snyder Cut

Superman actor Henry Cavill, whose mustache infamously caused Justice League post-production issues, sported facial hair to help announce the Zack Snyder cut's release. Cavill joined the unofficially titled DC Extended Universe in Snyder's Man of Steel, which released in 2013. He reprised the role of Clark Kent aka Superman in the director's 2015 followup, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as the 2017 movie Justice League. However, Snyder exited Justice League during post-production, with Warner Bros. bringing in Joss Whedon to direct reshoots. The resulting movie was a hodgepodge of the two directors' distinct styles and visions.

One aspect of Justice League's theatrical cut that was heavily criticized was the CGI work done on Cavill's face. The actor had grown out a mustache and scruff for his role in Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Cavill declined to shave for the Justice League reshoots. Since Superman is clean-shaven, Cavill's mustache and facial hair needed to be digitally removed from the reshot footage. Though it wasn't expensive work to remove Cavill's mustache, the uncanny valley of the scenes distracted many viewers and the actor's facial hair became a major talking point around Justice League.

Cavill joined Snyder for the Q&A portion of the director's Man of Steel rewatch via Vero live-stream, during which Cavill and Snyder announced Zack Snyder's Justice League will release on HBO Max in 2021. The actor, who's been self-isolating at home after production halted on The Witcher season 2 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, was sporting a mustache and scruff similar to the facial hair he had during the Justice League reshoots. See screenshots of Cavill during the livestream below, as well as his Instagram post that also includes a screenshot.

Of course, Cavill's facial hair probably isn't some kind of dig at the Justice League reshoots. More likely, it's just the result of the actor hanging out at home for the last nine weeks waiting to resume work on The Witcher season 2. Still, it's a funny reminder of how much hubbub there was about Cavill's mustache when Justice League first released. Cavill's mustache was part of the larger conversation surrounding the Justice League theatrical cut, especially because the CGI-removal of it served as a visual marker of the reshoots. Using Cavill's CGI-rendered clean-shaven face, we were able to discern how much Whedon changed from Snyder's original Justice League vision - and it was a lot, especially with regard to the Superman storyline.

Now, thanks to the Justice League Snyder cut officially getting a release on HBO Max next year, fans will finally get to see what the director originally envisioned for Superman. There's plenty still unknown about Snyder's original Justice League vision, but we do know Superman's black suit appeared. Though some Justice League cast members will return to provide extra dialogue and voice work for Snyder's version, it's not yet known if Cavill is among them. More information about Zack Snyder's Justice League and what needs to be done to release it will hopefully be revealed in the coming months. For now, fans can appreciate Cavill's mustache in all its glory. It is, after all, the facial hair that brought down Justice League (sort of).
