Harry Potter: 5 Things That Prove Gryffindor Is The Best House (& 5 That Prove It’s The Worst)

Thanks to the prominence J.K. Rowling gave Gryffindor throughout Harry Potter, it’s probably the first thing most viewers think of when picturing the school’s four houses. Bravery and determination are the things the Sorting Hat is typically on the lookout for when placing students into this prominent house.

Many people (particularly Gryffindors themselves) would be able to think up a multitude of reasons why Gryffindor is the best house in the series, so we’ve gathered five of those below. We’ve also delivered the counter-argument, by bringing five reasons why it may well be the worst, into the mix.

10 BEST: Harry, Ron, And Hermione Were Gryffindor

There has to be something pretty good about Gryffindor if it was able to house the three most important characters in the franchise. Harry, Ron and Hermione all first met before they had been given any house at all, but within minutes they had all teamed up on their long golden bench, forming a deep friendship that would become the basis of all seven books.

9 WORST: Wormtail Was Gryffindor

Despite there being a lot of good things to say about many of the members of Gryffindor house, there was one particularly bad apple who certainly didn’t deserve his place in a house that typically represented good. Wormtail betrayed his friends and got James and Lily killed, before going on to become the most important factor in Voldemort’s uprising at the end of The Goblet Of Fire.

8 BEST: The Bravery Element Won The Battle Of Hogwarts

While the idea of bravery doesn’t exactly seem like an overly important thing to have when at school and your main focus is getting good grades, it does have its benefits when... oh I don’t know... taking part in the largest wizarding war of all time. The bravery of a multitude of Gryffindors, from Harry to Neville, was probably one of the main reasons that good was able to triumph evil at the end of The Deathly Hallows.

7 WORST: Didn’t Earn The House Cup

In the very first Harry Potter book, Dumbledore makes one of his most ridiculously bad teaching decisions. Slytherin win the house cup fair and square, Dumbledore announces it and they celebrate.

Then the slimy old man decides to award the perfect amount of points to see Gryffindor win. The hopes and dreams of some young children are taken away in one of the cruelest fashions possible.

6 BEST: They’re Great At Quidditch

Before things get particularly dramatic as the battle becomes one of life and death during the later films, Quidditch is an important part of the Harry Potter story. Not only is Harry himself a great Quidditch player, but his father was before him. On top of that, the house are frequently having to defend their own title, as they win so often.

5 WORST: They Thought They Were The Best

One of the main problems with Gryffindor is how overtly connected they are to triumph and victory. They’re portrayed throughout the film as the ‘good’ house, in comparison to Slytherin’s ‘bad’ and Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff's ‘irrelevant’.

As such, most people want to be in Gryffindor and are disappointed when they find themselves elsewhere. The Gryffindors know this and have a certain snobbery about it.

4 BEST: They Have A Cool Sword

The sword of Gryffindor may present itself to any worthy Gryffindor student. The idea of a child being able to summon a magical sword is flawed on many levels, but you can’t deny how cool it is. Imagine being put into your house at school and then finding out that a magic sword might fly over to you one day if you need it to.

3 WORST: They Get Away With Everything

By being the universal symbol of good and the most relevant house throughout the Harry Potter franchise, the students of Gryffindor house are able to get away with absolute murder.

Think about how many times Harry, Ron and Hermione (and various others) should have been expelled from Hogwarts. Were they? Absolutely not.

2 BEST: Some Of The Best Teachers Were Gryffindor

The power balance of Gryffindor is presented even more forcefully by the fact that both the headmaster and deputy head are from Gryffindor. This seems like a massive power balance issue. Despite this, Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard of all time, McGonagall is the best teacher at Hogwarts and let’s not forget that Hagrid is a Gryffindor too. The lovable half-giant might not have been able to finish his studies, but we aren’t surprised he was sorted into Gryffindor.

1 WORST: James Potter Wasn’t Exactly Brave

The most flawed Gryffindor aside from Peter Pettigrew was the very man Pettigrew ultimately betrayed and had killed. While Harry idolized his father, it was revealed by the memories of Severus Snape that he was actually a rather horrible man. He didn’t have the bravery and good nature a Gryffindor is supposed to have, and was instead a cruel, arrogant bully who would definitely have been more suited to Slytherin.
