Extraction: 10 Things You Didn't Know About Netflix's Latest Action Hit

Netflix's Extraction has been the most talked-about movie in recent weeks. The action film which was produced by the Russo Brothers and directed by MCU stuntman Sam Hargrave stars Chris Hemsworth as a black-ops mercenary who gets hired to rescue a young boy from kidnappers.

Netflix has projected that Extraction—which is set in the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh—will be its most-watched movie of all time. A sequel is said to be in development as well. So, how about a bit more knowledge? Here are things people probably don't know about the film.

10 The Original Setting Was South America

Joe Russo—who wrote the film's screenplay—has stated that the events in the movie were initially meant to take place in an unspecified country in South America. That means audiences could have been treated to Narcos type of drama since the movie still has a drug lord as the villain.

However, after consulting the rest of the team, Russo changed the location to Dhaka in Bangladesh. He felt that South America had already been used so many times to tell drug-related stories in Hollywood movies hence the need for a different setting.

9 Extraction Was Adapted From A Graphic Novel

Extraction was based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Andre Parks. It's as perfect an adaptation as one can get since there's just one major difference between the graphic book and the movie. Instead of saving a boy, the mercenary in the book is tasked with saving the kidnapped daughter of an imprisoned crime lord.

And just like in the movie, he kills hundreds of guys and gets betrayed by some friends. He also falls in love with the kidnapped daughter, because what's a good story without some romance in it? He then leaves the young lady a letter for her to read when he dies.

8 It Was Sam Hargrave's Directorial Debut

Hargrave is one of Hollywood's most sought after stuntmen. He worked as a stuntman and all-round stunt coordinator in all the Russo-directed Marvel movies. There is obviously a healthy working relationship between him and the Russos.

Before the Netflix hit, Hargrave had never directed a movie before. He also had an acting role in the action movie  Atomic Blonde As for his skills as a director, he did a great job for a first-timer. Hopefully, he'll direct many more action films.

7 The Title Was Changed Several Times

Coming up with a good title is never easy. But a title is often key in determining the virality of a book, movie, or article. For this particular movie, Netflix wasn't quite sure what to use at first. Initially, the title was Dhaka, to reflect the name of the city in which events take place.

Since this might have ended up being confusing to some audiences, the title was then changed to Out Of The Fire. This sounded too similar to the Denzel Washington movie Man On Fire which also has a similar premise. It was thus concluded that the title would be Extraction.

6 The Child Actor Who Plays Ovi Is Known For TV Commercials

Rudhraksh Jaiswal is the child actor who plays Ovi, the son of a drug lord that goes to rescue. Rudhraksh isn't a new face in India and Bangladesh. He has been appearing in TV commercials ever since he was a little boy. He is currently 16 years old.

He is also a student at Billabong International School in Mumbai. Apart from acting, he also practices mixed martial arts and dancing. His first film appearance was in 2013. Clearly, the future seems bright for the young man. Hopefully, he'll become a major Hollywood star.

5 Who Is The Badass Lady?

It can be argued that Nik Khan was the best character in the movie. She is the woman who kills the villain as well as his stubborn sniper. In the movie, Khan is Tyler's handler. She communicates with him as he navigates the city and tries to ensure everything goes smoothly for him.

Khan is played by Iranian actor Golshifteh Farani. She isn't new in Hollywood. Farani appeared in the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival Best Picture winner Elly. She also had supporting roles in Exodus: Gods And Kings, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Paterson.

4 One Of The Lead Actors Re-read The Contract Ten Times To Be Sure He Was Working With The Same Russo Brothers

Priyanshu Painyuli plays the main villain: Bangladeshi crime boss Amir Asif. He found it so hard to believe that he was working with the same Russo Brothers from the Avengers films that he read the contract again and again just to be sure he wasn't dreaming.

The actor opened up about all this during an interview with Bollywood Life. Priyanshu Painyuli also took three months to learn the Bangladeshi language of Bengali since he actually comes from India and not Bangladesh.

3 The Underwater Scene Was Shot In A Water Tank

Extraction has many impressive scenes and the first one happens when Tyler Rake jumps from a cliff into a large body of water and remains seated at the bottom in a meditative state for several minutes. It almost felt like we were watching Aquaman again.

According to Hargrave, the scene was shot in a water tank on a stage and Hemsworth held his breath for about three minutes. The actor had to be reminded to come out of the water because he was in such a relaxed and meditative state. Note that the average adult can hold their breath for 45 to 60 seconds.

2 Hargrave Never Really Had Plans To Be Director

During an interview with Games Radar, Sam Hargrave revealed that he read the Extraction script eight years ago and never really knew he was going to direct. The during the set of Avengers: Infinity War in 2017, Joe Russo asked him if he'd like to direct it.

He couldn't turn it down. And that's how he became a director. The Russo Brothers had seen how dedicated he was in his work as a stunt coordinator and felt he was destined for much more. Truly, the best things come when one least expects it.

1 Chris Hemsworth Broke His Own Set Tradition

Apparently, Chris Hemsworth always has his family on set since he doesn't like being away from them for long periods of time. However, the actor left his family at home while filming Extraction. And he kinda felt that this was beneficial in the long run.

He was quoted as saying: "I guess, there was a benefit in that which meant I could come back to the hotel or wherever after a day of shooting and we could just get down to rehearsing the next sequence because we had a very compressed schedule."
