The current landscape of television generally has shows that cover just one topic as its premise, yet Curb Your Enthusiasm remains popular for ticking all the boxes. It’s a series that likes to make fun of the little things, and this eventually balloons into the narrative of each season.
However, there’s no mistaking that recent seasons haven’t been as strong as their earlier counterparts, and there’s a valid argument over whether Curb Your Enthusiasm should end. Season 11 is all but a given, with many fans excitedly waiting for its release. Since this debate can go both ways, here are five reasons each why there should be a Season 11 and why there shouldn’t.
10 Don't Want: It's Become More Of The Same
Before the release of the tenth season, there was hope that some changes would be incorporated. However, it turned out to be a repeat of the previous seasons, so there was no chance of being surprised.
By now, fans know what to expect in that the outline involves Larry coming across some snooty individuals, whom he insults one way or another. From there on, every episode follows pretty much the same format, and since there are already ten seasons worth of this, there isn’t any need for more.
9 Want: A Chance Of Another Seinfeld Reunion
There’s still hope for some more Seinfeld to once again be incorporated in Curb Your Enthusiasm. The comparisons between the two shows are endless, and it’s worth bringing in the cast once again.
With it already being thirty years Seinfeld debuted, Curb's next season can revisit the idea of putting another reunion show together. A funny way of making this idea feel fresh would be to have Larry include himself as a major character on the series.
8 Don't Want: Characters Have Become Far Too Unlikable
Along with knowing what to expect from an episode, it’s also become easy to predict how the characters will behave. Fans know that Larry is unapologetic and vain; Jeff will happily cheat on his wife; Susie will badmouth anyone; and Leon will encourage Larry in his misadventures.
While this is clearly the point of the show, many seasons have shown that being awful is pretty much all the characters are about. Even Seinfeld ended before its characters were completely exposed as having no redeeming qualities. So, Season 11 will probably only give fans more ill-mannered exploits that they’ve already seen enough of.
7 Want: Potential For Wacky Takes On Celebrities
One hilarious aspect of the show that doesn’t get old is the introduction of celebrities and them being “exposed” as being nasty pieces of work. The fictional take on these celebrities almost always involves them showing the vain side of Hollywood, which makes for great moments.
Season 11 can better the previous season by adding in further big names, with the chance of having younger actors to bring in youthful energy and poke fun at their fame. The wackier these scenarios get, the more justification for bringing in these celebrities.
6 Don't Want: More About Offending Than Creativity
In recent seasons, Curb Your Enthusiasm really has turned the dial much higher on the offensive aspect of things. The ninth season had Larry offending religious people while Season 10 had him inadvertently mock the #MeToo movement.
Sure, comedy is all about finding the lighter side of things, but the show has reached a point where being offensive has become the joke rather than working around it and being creative. Season 11 might just make Larry out to be completely out of touch, and his lovable curmudgeon appeal could be lost.
5 Want: Room For Character Growth
A way to make the comedy more imaginative would be by having Larry and his friends become enlightened by how they’ve behaved for the last two decades. Season 11 is the best opportunity to incorporate character growth, especially considering how many people Larry has angered.
Throwing in one remorseful event for Larry here and there spread out over the season will hurt no one, and it’ll instead be something to look forward to. With Larry now in his seventies, it’s worth exploring his nicer side in the future.
4 Don't Want: The Role Of Women Isn't Getting Better
Considering the way the show has always worked, it’s not likely that Season 11 will change things up. For this reason, it’s better to end it rather than continue to make the role of women feel unnecessary.
Both Cheryl and Susie have one-note personalities, in that the former is exasperated by things while the latter spews out rage-filled insults. Season 10 had some moments where Larry had misogynistic tendencies, so having something like that in the next season really doesn’t sound fun.
3 Want: More Of Larry David's Antics
One fact that can’t be debated is that Curb Your Enthusiasm has incredible replay value thanks to the lack of serious plot lines. Larry has been able to showcase one crazy antic after another, with this practice continuing throughout the entire show.
For those who are fans of his lack of growth, Season 11 will only be a delight as it will provide more for the highlight reel of Larry’s ridiculous exploits. If done right, the next season can blend in Larry’s charm with his bad luck.
2 Don't Want: It Should Go Out While The Quality Is Still High
Most shows take their leave if they’re lucky to last a decade, although a majority of these lose the quality that made them popular in the first place. Some examples include Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, among others. And it isn't even restricted to just comedy, but all genres.
Like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm will also do well by ending on their on terms before fans call it out for going downhill. The law of diminishing returns is very real, and it would be a shame if this series ends up being used as an example. Its past 10 seasons are worthy of standing tall without another season.
1 Want: To Have Stories Relevant To Modern Issues
The series is known for keeping up with current trends, even if the comedy might end up being offensive. If that part is tackled, then there’s no reason why Season 11 can’t come back with a hilarious take on another talked-about topic.
Even the relatively lower quality that was Season 9 had quite a few hilarious references to the current climate, and it’s no doubt fun to see a show making light on heavy topics that others aren’t willing to explore. With that in mind, perhaps Season 11 will be a welcomed return.
