Pretty Little Liars & Gilmore Girls: 10 Similarities Between These Shows

Pretty Little Liars was a teen drama that focused on a group of friends who received anonymous and ominous messages from someone called A. Gilmore Girls was a drama show that focused on a mother and a daughter who were best friends. While the premises of these stories were a bit different, there were actually several similarities between these two series.

From how smart the two brunette main characters were and how conservative two of the mothers were to the fact that these two TV shows were filmed on the same set, see 10 different ways they were alike down below!

10 Spencer’s & Rory’s Intelligence

The Gilmore girls were Lorelai and her daughter, Rory, a young brunette who enjoyed reading, who dressed in a polished and preppy way and who was quite studious. One of the main characters on PLL was Spencer Hastings, who was also brunette, a smart and studious reader and a character who dressed in a refined and preppy way!

9 Aria & Lane Dying Their Hair

Back in the day, Aria Montgomery had pink streaks in her hair, which were shown off in flashbacks. That choice was not surprising, due to how spunky and funky this character was.

Lane Kim, Rory’s best friend, grew up in a strict religious household, yet she had a rebellious side and a love of rock music. In one episode, she decided to dye her hair, but at the last minute, she freaked out and made Rory fix it. Still, these high schoolers both made changes to their locks.

8 How Crafty Dean & Toby Were

Throughout these stories, several significant others were featured, including Dean and Toby, and these two were pretty similar. They were tall and slim. They were super sweet and caring boyfriends, as well as first loves to Rory and Spencer, respectively.

Furthermore, both of these men were good with their hands: Dean ended up in the construction business, working for Tom, and Toby ended up building Spencer a rocking chair and Yvonne (but really… Spenc again) a house.

7 The Bad Boys, Jess & Caleb

Two more boyfriends were Jess from Gilmore Girls and Caleb from Pretty Little Liars, and these were both bad boys. They showed up in town, catching the eyes of Rory in Stars Hollow and Hanna Marin in Rosewood. Of course, both of these main characters ended up dating both of these men, who were actually total sweethearts, despite their tough exteriors.

6 Emily’s & Lane’s Conservative Moms

Another similarity would be how conservative Emily Fields’ and Lane Kim’s mothers were. On PLL, Emily’s father was in the military, so it was mostly just her mom at home… a woman who cared for her yet who was not too happy (at first) to learn that her daughter was gay or that her daughter’s girlfriend did drugs.

Lane might as well have been in the military, with all of her household rules! Her mother was one of the strictest ones in television history, but she, too, cared deeply for her child.

5 Hanna’s & Lorelai’s Reluctance To Get Married

Through the years, a few weddings were featured on both of these TV shows, though a couple of these brides were dragging their feet. First up, there was Lorelai Gilmore, with her baggage; she literally ran away from her wedding with Max, she then got engaged to Luke, and they didn’t end up tying the knot until Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

For Hanna, she dated Caleb in high school and for a little while in New York, but they broke up. In the time jump, she was shown engaged to a man named Jordan, and she did not want to plan their wedding, as well as noticed that her friends knew nothing about him. That was because she was meant to be with her one true love!

4 Hanna & Rory Being Pregnant In The Finales

At the end of PLL, the girls were all shown hugging and crying, as they were off on honeymoons, off to start new careers, off to leave home once again… and Hanna revealed she was pregnant!

At the end of the Gilmore Girls Netflix revival, Rory dropped a bomb by telling her mom that she, too, was expecting… and fans are still waiting to find out who the father is.

3 Themed Episodes Featuring Holidays & Costumes

Everyone has their favorite character, season, episode and television show, but one thing is for sure: The episodes of these two shows that featured holidays and costumes were some of the best.

For instance, all of the town events the Gilmore girls attended led to Rory dressing up like a pilgrim or this mother-daughter duo posing as art. And each season, the Liars had a school dance or a Halloween party that brought about incredible ensembles.

2 A Go-To Place For Coffee

Something else that both of these series had was a go-to place for coffee. In Rosewood, it was The Brew, a hip hangout that had other treats and sweets and that ended up being owned by Ezra. In Stars Hollow, it was Luke’s Diner, an establishment that offered up anything and everything and that, according to the Gilmore girls, served the best cup o’ Joe.

1 The Same Set

Of course, these stories had similar coffee shops… because they used the same filming location! That is right, the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank is home to a quaint and fake downtown area, complete with a white church with its steeple and a gazebo in the middle of town.
