Parks and Recreation featured several references to HBO's Game of Thrones during the sitcom's seven-season run. The NBC series debuted two years before George R.R. Martin's book series was adapted for TV but it was still around during the fantasy's peak in popularity. Many of the mentions came from one particular person who could be considered one of Game of Thrones' biggest fans.
Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott), the boyfriend and eventual husband of Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler), was an enormous follower of Game of Thrones. In fact, he was proud of his love of fantasy which was a reason in his development of Cones of Dunshire. At times, Ben would get teased for his hobbies and interests but he took the HBO show very seriously. Unfortunately, Ben, whose eBay username was "Tall Tyrion Lannister," was never able to share his thoughts on the show's true ending since Parks and Rec ended a few years before Game of Thrones.
It's not uncommon for sitcoms set in modern-day to throw out references to popular TV or movie titles. Ben alone mentioned his fondness for franchises like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Twin Peaks over the course of the series but Westeros received the most callouts. Here's a list of each Game of Thrones mention and when they appeared.
- Season 4, Episode 4 "Pawnee Rangers" - Ben was noticeably in a bad mood so Donna asked him what was wrong, thinking HBO may have cancelled Game of Thrones. He then claimed that the series would never reach cancellation because "it's not just for fantasy enthusiasts, they're telling human stories in a fantasy world."
- Season 4, Episode 22 "Win, Lose, or Draw" - April accidentally deleted the department's important files so she and Andy cooked up a plan to move away and change their identities. In discussing possible places to live, Winterfell, the headquarters of House Stark in Game of Thrones, was on the list.
- Season 5, Episode 6 "Ben's Parents" - For Leslie and Ben's engagement party, the former made a "unity quilt" to for the Knope-Wyatt union. Each member of the families had their own square and of course, there was a Game of Thrones block for Ben.
- Season 6, Episode 14 "Anniversaries" - Leslie and Ben prepared to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary and the latter hoped to finally become the better gift-giver. Much to Ben's surprise and elation, Leslie got him a replica of the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones. More of Ben's excitement was shown in a Parks and Rec deleted scene.
- Season 7, Episode 1 "2017" - Joan Callamezzo released her ninth memoir titled "Game of Joans" which April received a copy of at a book signing.
- Season 7, Episode 4 "Leslie and Ron" - Parks and Recreation hilariously predicted the end of Game of Thrones when Leslie and Ron were locked in the office by their former coworkers. Leslie tried to plead with her husband to let her out because it was the night of the show's series finale.
- Season 7, Episode 10 "The Johnny Karate Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show" - Ben quoted Game of Thrones after being knighted by Lord Edgar Covington on Andy's TV show.
