Grey's Anatomy: Why Miranda And Richard Aren't Real Friends

Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber have possibly the strongest bond of all those in the Grey's Anatomy universe. They are the only two characters (other than Meredith Grey) who have remained in the show since its very first episode. With all those years together, it makes sense that these two are such good friends.

They have been through an awful lot together and have remained incredibly supportive of each other. However, despite all the positives that have come out of their friendship, there have been many moments that made the audience question whether or not Bailey and Webber were actually friends.

10 Richard Is Bailey's Mentor

From the very first episode, it has been made very clear that Miranda Bailey doesn't view her superiors as superior. That's not to say that she doesn't respect or admire them but she has a more informal relationship with them than most other doctors.

However, the one person that Bailey has always viewed as a mentor is Richard Webber. He taught Bailey when she was an intern, and he continued to teach her until she didn't need him anymore. The bond between these two is nigh unbreakable but Richard will always be a mentor to Bailey, not a friend.

9 Richard Was Angry At Bailey For Getting Pregnant

Bailey made such a big impression in Season 1, what with her no-nonsense attitude that many viewers were surprised when it was revealed that she had a husband. Bailey's private life at that time was definitely private, which made it all the more shocking when she revealed to Richard that she was pregnant.

Although now Bailey is renowned for being an awesome mother to young Tuck, at the time, it was quite exciting to see how Bailey would handle motherhood. However, when she came back after her maternity leave, Richard treated her differently, which Bailey quickly called him out on.

8 Bailey Shunned Richard During Her First Day As Chief Of Surgery

Bailey has always been an ambitious woman and so generally she achieves whatever she sets her mind to. This is basically because she is a tenacious, hard-working surgeon who is incredibly popular among her peers. It is, therefore, no wonder that she became Chief of Surgery after Owen Hunt left the job.

Bailey worked hard to become Chief, but Richard also worked hard molding Bailey into the amazing surgeon she is today. On her first day, Bailey was overcome with nerves, and so that's why she made mistakes, like shunning Richard and the rest of the attendings when they tried to congratulate her.

7 Richard Let Bailey Take The Fall For Denny's Death

Season 2 of Grey's Anatomy is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the best runs in the show's history, and the last few episodes really live up to the hype. Izzie fell in love with one of her patients, Denny Duquette, who needed a new heart.

However, things took a massive turn for the worse when Izzie cut Denny's LVAD wire to ensure that he got a new heart. While Denny's operation was a success, Denny died of a stroke shortly after. Richard hosted a conference to explore what went wrong and allowed Bailey to take to the stand to answer how she let her interns get wildly out of control.

6 Richard Tried To Take Control Of Bailey's Career

Richard always tries to do what he thinks is best, especially in Bailey's case, but sometimes this makes him come across as slightly petulant and controlling. In Season 5, Bailey was finishing her final year of residency and was wondering what she should do next.

She was torn between becoming a general surgery attending or starting a pediatric fellowship, recommended by Arizona Robbins. Richard did not take kindly to the fact that Bailey was considering a fellowship and behaved incredibly immature, despite Bailey choosing general surgery in the end.

5 Bailey Replaced Richard With Eliza Minnick

Season 13 of Grey's Anatomy was a bit of a mixed bag. It had some fantastic and emotionally draining storylines, such as the death of Maggie Pierce's mom. However, it was also the season that pitted the doctors against each other and nearly ruined some extremely precious friendships.

Unfortunately, the bond between Richard and Bailey was one of those friendships that was tested. Under pressure from Catherine Avery, Bailey hired a new residency director, Eliza Minnick. She did this, though, without informing Richard, who was angry and hurt that Bailey could replace him so easily.

4 Bailey Fired Richard

After the events of Season 13, Bailey and Richard worked on repairing their friendship, and the two surgeons were finally at a good place again in Season 15. However, that was all about to change again.

Late on in the season, Meredith had a young patient who needed surgery but couldn't afford to pay for it. Desperate to help out, Mer put her daughter's name on the paperwork, essentially committing insurance fraud. When Bailey found out, she was absolutely livid. Richard and Alex tried to stick up for her, and so Bailey fired them all.

3 Bailey Called Out Richard For Being A Drunk

In Season 9, Bailey had a very difficult time of it. The hospital discovered that some of its previously healthy post-operation patients were suddenly developing infections and subsequently dying. No one knew what the cause was and so the board members had no choice but to launch an investigation.

It transpired that Bailey had unwittingly infected them during surgery thanks to faulty surgical gloves. However, this caused Bailey to stress out and when Richard tried to console her, Bailey snapped. She lectured Richard on how she had covered up his drinking for years, and he hadn't lifted a finger to help her.

2 Bailey Mollycoddled Richard After He Was Electrocuted

The Season 9 finale was a very tense couple of episodes. The hospital suffered from a massive power outage, Meredith went into labor after falling down the stairs, and Richard got electrocuted when trying to fix the back-up generator.

Bailey was one of the surgeons who worked on Richard and thanks to her and Meredith, Richard survived. However, his recovery was long and hard, and Richard lost the will to live. Unwittingly, Bailey aided his wishes by refusing to intubate him, partly out of guilt for the way she had spoken to him previously.

1 Bailey Failed To Save Adele

Richard was married to Adele since before the show began, so in a way, they are an original Grey's Anatomy couple. It was clear that these two really did love each other but that didn't stop them from suffering from almighty relationship difficulties.

In Season 7, Adele was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, which only got worse as the series progressed. On Bailey's wedding day, Adele was rushed to the hospital, needing emergency surgery. The surgery went well and Adele looked like she would recover but then died later on. Bailey tried her best but Adele died in Richard's arms.
