Friday the 13th Part 2: What Happened to Paul | Screen Rant

Slasher sequel Friday the 13th Part 2 leaves the fate of male lead Paul (John Furey) unresolved, but here's what his intended conclusion was. Friday the 13th Part 2 of course marked the debut of Jason Voorhees as the franchise's antagonist, after his mother Pamela spent some time hacking up camp counselors in the original 1980 film. Continuity-wise, it really doesn't make any sense that Jason is still alive, as his drowning death was Pamela's whole reason for killing. Still, it began a long tradition of each sequel readily ignoring consistent storytelling.

Lack of logic aside, fans tend to dig Jason's slasher debut just about as much as they enjoyed his mom's rampage, if not more so. Sporting overalls, a burlap sack over his head, and long unkempt hair, Jason almost looks like a backwoods mutant here, an appearance he'd never again have. This helps give Friday the 13th Part 2 a very unique vibe within the series, as does the fact that Jason is still very much a human being at this point, capable of being physically fought off at times and sometimes sustaining damage.

Despite being human, Jason is still a very brutal killer in Friday the 13th Part 2, and there's usually no doubt when he's offed someone. Except in the case of Paul, who just kind of disappears near the end of the sequel, and is never mentioned again.

It's a bit unclear what happened to Paul at the end of Friday the 13th Part 2, as there's a few conflicting assertions about the planned outcome for his character. For many years, a bit of trivia passed around outline alleged that John Furey quit the film during production over a pay dispute, and that's why Paul vanished. Furey is said to have dodged a question about that at a fan convention by saying the fans could decide if the claim was true, which certainly isn't a denial. However, other sources say that Paul's fate was intentionally left ambiguous, and that was the idea all along.

Complicating things is the existence of an alternate ending in which the severed head of Pamela Voorhees actually opens its eyes, which would've apparently been intended to signify that Paul had died, as it happened not long after Ginny was calling out for him. This ending shot wasn't used due to the effect looking fake, but its removal also excised the implication of Paul's death. That said, a behind the scenes shot exists of what looks to be Paul's dead face, so it seems to be settled: Paul died. One assumes Ginny went looking for him, but it's anyone's guess if she ever found the body. Jason might've given him a thorough chopping.
