Big Brother is a reality show that loves to draw on the feeling of nostalgia. While each season contains different houseguests and new twists, there are many nods to their previous seasons which feel like inside jokes between production and superfans. These may be in the form of favorite twists, competitions, and punishments.
The show also regularly casts contestants to fill a specific stereotype, the brainless meat-head, the nerdy superfan, and the quirky best friend. Some of these reoccurring aspects have of the game have become so commonplace they could be considered Big Brother traditions. Some of these traditions are great, and others... well, not so much. Here are five traditions that need to go away, and five that can stick around!
10 Go Away: Unanimous Eviction Votes
An emerging tradition in recent seasons has been unanimous eviction votes at the beginning of the season. This unanimous vote is a consequence of a reoccurring trend of a giant super alliance forming early in the game and bullying all of the house into voting the way they want. Houseguests outside of the alliance become fearful they will become the next target if they don't follow along with the request from the players in power. This complacency makes for a boring season, and that's why it's time for this tradition to go away!
9 Stick Around: Double Eviction
The first double eviction was a twist unleashed in season five of Big Brother. In recent seasons, the double eviction has become commonplace. Even though the contestants usually know when a double eviction is coming and have a plan, it still makes for a very exciting live eviction episode. The double eviction always shakes things up, and that's why it needs to stick around!
8 Go Away: Casting Stereotypes
One controversial topic surrounding Big Brother is their casting of contestants within a certain stereotype. Take a look at any season, and you can find the same personality types and physical attributes. While this can contribute to repetitive gameplay, there is also a much larger issue here. Casting within these stereotypes has led to players getting edits that may differ greatly from their actual gameplay seen on the feeds.
It is also the root of much of the racism and sexism in the house. From now on, Big Brother showrunners, just cast the best contestants and don't worry about sticking to your formula.
7 Stick Around: Battle Back
Nowadays, contestants expect at least one evicted houseguest to return to the game. This is either done via a pre-jury battle back or a post-jury battle back. In the most recent season, the camp comeback twist was essentially a new take on the pre-jury battle back. Cliff Hogg, the winner of the camp comeback challenge, was the longest-lasting returning houseguest, going all of the way to the final four. Even though houseguests are expecting this twist and try to plan for it, it is still a fan favorite.
6 Go Away: Recruits
There are two types of Big Brother players. There are those who apply for the show, and those who are found by recruiters and may have little to no knowledge of the show. In recent seasons, recruits have become more common, but these recruits rarely add anything interesting to the game.
Some have even become overwhelmed and depressed, shutting down because they did not fully understand the game into which they were entering. When there are so many fans dying to compete, it seems wrong to cast people who don't have their heart in the game.
5 Stick Around: All Day/Night Punishments
There are many different types of punishments in Big Brother. These punishments are often a consequence of losing a competition. Some of the most entertaining punishments are the punishments that require houseguests to respond every time they hear a specific sound. Some examples of this type of punishment that stand out are "The Whackstreet Boys" punishment in season 17 and Tommy's "space explorer" punishment in season 21.
This type of punishment always results in a hilarious segment and gives the feedsters something to watch. For those reasons we want this punishment to stick around!
4 Go Away: Perpetual Pawn
Houseguests are always concerned about "getting blood on their hands." They prefer not to make waves unless it's absolutely necessary. Unfortunately, this has led to one houseguest essentially being used as a pawn for the entire game. Whenever this person is nominated, you can be pretty sure the player sitting next to them is going home.
This type of cautious gameplay differs greatly from the gameplay of contestants who have solidified themselves as BB greats. It is for this reason that many fans consider the older seasons better. Future Big Brother houseguests, stop with the pawns, make some moves, and own them!
3 Stick Around: Jury Segments
Jury segments are often heavily anticipated. Many fan favorites end up in the jury house, and it's great to see them speak their mind with no game consequences on the line. With the threat of eviction removed, houseguests can speak openly about how they feel and their strategy in the game.
This can lead to entertaining jury fights, unexpected friendships, and even shocking revelations. There is nothing more fun than watching fan-favorite players discover secret information or have their suspicions confirmed. Fans love these segments so much, some have even called for jury live feeds!
2 Go Away: Bitter Jury
In season three of Big Brother, one of the best players to ever play the game, Danielle Reyes, lost because her fellow houseguests went home, watched the show, and saw her savage diary room confessions. Many fans felt she was robbed, and thus, the jury was born!
Instead of going home to watch the show air, houseguests were sequestered in jury house where they received limited information about the happenings in the house until finale night when they cast their vote for the winner. The point of the creation of the jury was to encourage players to be manipulative and cunning without worrying about losing the game because of their strategy.
Unfortunately, in recent years, many deserving players have lost because of a bitter jury. Big Brother isn't about being the most honest and decent player, it's about making the best decisions to get to the end. Let's throw away the bitter jury and get some houseguests who will vote for the best player, even if that player was the cause of their demise.
1 Stick Around: Jury Roundtable
Each year, in an attempt to avoid a bitter jury, the houseguests in the jury sit around and discuss the players in the final three. This conversation is lead by Dr. Will Kirby, one of the most infamous and legendary players of Big Brother. The contestants share information and discuss the best and worst moves by each player. They also discuss their personal criteria for determining the best player in the game.
This segment is beloved because viewers are given an insight into the players' heads and because fans are delighted to see Dr. Will once more. Let's hope that Dr. Will is leading this segment for decades to come!
