Swap shops perfectly reflect the innocence which permeates throughout the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community, but it appears even in an island paradise there will always be someone trying to ruin everyone's good time. Animal Crossing: New Horizons released only a few weeks ago on March 20, 2020, alongside its fan art companion DOOM Eternal, but has already become one of the most talked-about games in recent memory.
Likely at least partially due to the current outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus which is forcing more people across the globe to stay at home than ever before, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has seen an incredibly high amount of players in a very short period of time, and many of them are discovering the addictive nature of owing a raccoon money for the very first time. There are many ways players have personalized Animal Crossing: New Horizons gameplay experiences, with some players doing nothing but fishing and other turning their island into a sanctuary for their infinitely spawning Animal Crossing tarantulas.
However, according to a recent article by Eurogamer, it doesn't seem like everyone is playing just to have a good time. Eurogamer writer Emma Kent, owner of the Fishbowl's Swap Shop in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, describes a day when her in-game trading post was the victim of an attempted robbery, and although she was able to send the would-be thief away with some quick thinking (and the Nintendo Switch's penchant for kicking players when the console enters sleep mode) her story still serves as a warning for those who think everyone in New Horizons is playing by the honor system. Check out the announcement of the attempted theft below, along with a plea from the proprietor for players to have better manners:
According to Kent's description of the event, the offending player had already sucked up "half of the items in the swap shop" before she had noticed, and "Although I'd considered the possibility of this happening, I panicked." Fortunately, Kent didn't end the gaming session in the normal way, which would have let her now-unwanted island guest retain all of the stolen goods. Instead, she disconnected the Nintendo Switch's internet connection by putting the console to sleep, and afterwards she said "I loaded back in, and with a huge sigh of relief, there were all my items."
Kent's story should serve as a warning to anyone else who is the proprietor of an in-game Animal Crossing: New Horizons swap shop. While many of the people who purchased Nintendo's latest hit truly are there to relax, catch an oarfish, and enjoy a portable island vacation, some players will always just want to steal and destroy and burn everything others try to create. Swap shop owners should stay vigilant, and remember: When in doubt, just put Animal Crossing: New Horizons to sleep.
