The unanswered questions and plot twists are what makes The Blacklist such a great show. Who is Raymond Reddington? Why did he walk into the FBI and surrender? What is his relationship to Elizabeth Keen? Those were the questions we asked within the first 10 minutes of the premiere episode.
As The Blacklist enters its seventh season, most of the best questions still need answers. The writers have managed to provide some top-notch storylines but, while some have been great, others have fallen by the wayside. Here are the best and worst storylines for the hit NBC show The Blacklist.
10 The Red and Liz Connection (Best)
Is he or isn't he? That has been the question that viewers have asked themselves the moment Raymond Reddington and Elizabeth Keen appeared on screen together. The way he protects and talks to her gives off a fatherly vibe. While she has asked him numerous times, Red has either denied or avoided the answer.
The test was done and it was revealed he is her father and that changed the dynamic of the show. But in the true nature of The Blacklist, along came a monkey wrench that put that theory to the test. With Red's identity now in question, we're back at square one.
9 Tom's Double Life (Worst)
Liz kicks herself when she thinks back to her early days with Tom. Liz was the FBI Agent and Tom the mild-mannered school teacher. Viewers knew the truth, but for Liz to be a profiler, how did she miss it all those years? It was a terrible way to begin a new show.
The concept was right but, early on, the writers botched this storyline. Tom was hiding weapons and passports in the house. Leaving the country, committing crimes, and murder. And yet, his wife missed it all. Liz had to grow first but she was very blind in the beginning.
8 Who Is Red (Best)
If the major question surrounding The Blacklist was the relationship between Red and Liz, the real shocker arrived in Season 6. Who is the real Raymond Reddington? It sounds strange but the infamous suitcase revealed that the Reddington we love is not the original. Well, at least that's what's being portrayed.
Who is he? According to Liz's grandfather, Reddington was supposed to be Illya Kosov. But we would find out that wasn't true. We know he was a spy for the United States then supposedly went rogue and became a master criminal but is that the real Raymond? Are these his stories we're being told or someone else's?
7 Ressler The Killer (Worst)
The Boy Scout turned killer then clean-up artist all but seems lost in the script somewhere. Donald Ressler is the anti-Reddington. He's clean-cut, direct, and seemingly honest. Well, not so fast. Ressler has made his mistakes and the main one was killing Laurel Hitchin.
Although it was done in self-defense, Ressler covered it up. It was at that time that viewers believed his character had joined the dark side. Well, he didn't. And to make the situation even more disturbing is that the writers just forgot about it and now Ressler is back with a halo on his head.
6 Red vs Mr. Kaplan (Best)
Besides the storyline of who Red really is, there is no one better than this. Friends turned enemies on the hunt for one another was a classic approach to the show. The storyline was so good that it lasted an entire season. It was bubbling for some time as Mr. Kaplan did what she thought was right to protect Liz. Red was doing what he felt was right for all parties involved. Someone had to lose.
It was hard watching two fan-favorite characters go toe-to-toe but it was well worth it. The intrigue as to what was in the briefcase to Kate breaking Reddington down to his last dollar made for great TV. There proved to be no shortage of ideas in the writer's room.
5 Liz and Katarina (Worst)
Viewers knew who Katarina was well before she moved across the hall from Liz. But that storyline was just off. As bad as Liz needed a babysitter, she just up and left her daughter Agnes with a stranger? Their whole exchange from that moment was weird. Was it supposed to be a neighbor thing or something more?
When the truth was finally revealed, Liz said she knew it was her. But, if that was true, why not make a move earlier? As great as The Blacklist has been over the last six years, this was a moment where the writers failed miserably trying to tie up loose ends.
4 Red/Liz vs The Cabal (Best)
Red has gone against many enemies over the years. However, The Cabal gave him his biggest scare. The Cabal wanted Red dead and was willing to go to great lengths to make that happen. But it wasn't just him they wanted.
The Cabal attacked Liz and Tom's wedding and tried to kill Liz which resulted in a great gunfight scene. The Cabal provided The Blacklist with a great villain in Matias who just seemed as if he could not be killed and was willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. He truly wanted Red dead and made a cat and mouse game out of it.
3 Jennifer Reddington (Worst)
If trying to figure out the puzzle of the Raymond Reddington and Elizabeth Keen paternity saga wasn't enough, the writers hit us with another truck. Red has another daughter--Jennifer Reddington. Unlike Liz, she wants nothing to do with her father. In fact, her main goal is to take him down.
Once Liz catches wind, they join forces which results in Reddington going to prison and almost executed by lethal injection. While sometimes thrilling, it was also often boring due to the lack of a storyline. Jennifer had so much hate for Red and she was never given a real chance to get to know him as Liz did. The writers dropped the ball on this one.
2 The Suitcase (Best)
Mr. Kaplan set off a series of events that uncorked one of the biggest mysteries yet on The Blacklist. What was in the suitcase she dug up? For an entire season, the question was on the lips of every Blacklist fan. What was Reddington hiding in that suitcase? What's also bothersome is why did they bury it in the first place instead of destroying it?
The box has destroyed lives, careers, reputations, and families. Without it, Tom would still be alive. Samar may still be with the Task Force and Reddington, well, he would be the only Raymond Reddington we know of.
1 Liz's Betrayal (Worst)
How many times has Liz betrayed Reddington? From the first episode, you could see his love for her. While skeptical, Liz still let him in. She was a fugitive, he was there. While facing imminent death, it was him willing to trade his life for hers. And how has he been repaid? By being double-crossed by his own child.
Now, Liz has apparently sided with Katarina even after Red went to prison because of Liz and was almost executed. Each good deed he does for Liz is almost met by a horrible one by her. Can the writers just stick to either a father/daughter relationship or just a hate relationship? It's too much back and forth and for no real reason.
