Star Wars: The 10 Most Hated Storylines | ScreenRant

The Star Wars franchise is the biggest pop culture phenomenon in the world in terms of properties debuting in cinema. It is a worldwide colossus that has dominated for over forty years. This did not happen by way of mediocre films; the original three Star Wars films are one of the best cinematic trilogies of all time.

The prequel trilogy and sequel trilogy also are excellent in their own ways, even if divisive and the extended canon of books, comics, and video games are also thriving. This does not mean there are no terrible stories in Star Wars, though, and in fact, there are many that are hated.

10 Palpatine's Return

A lot of things about The Rise Of Skywalker have garnered a lot of criticism, and a couple could make its way on this list. But the most hated and the most vocal criticism seems to come from Palpatine's return rightfully

It seemed as though perhaps fans were wrong, maybe Disney did have an underlying plan in place for the movies. That was not the case. Palpatine got shoehorned in entirely, and even those who just shut off their minds and had fun with the divisive film could see right through it. No reasons got given, and more questions have been raised rather than answered, with the novel not much helping.

9 Luke's Exile

Luke's exile on Ach-To is one of the most divisive storylines in all of Star Wars, and it is an extremely vocal set of fans that earn its place on this list. Even though there are a lot of people who love the story and all it represents, the vocal nature of the detractors earns this storyline's place here.

Some fans seen Luke's exile on Ach-To as being not Star Wars and utterly separate from the character fans had come to know and love. A lot of the hate for The Last Jedi comes from Luke's storyline despite its beautiful end. There are a lot of people who love it, but also a lot of very vocal haters.

8 Anakin & Padmé's Romance

The Anakin-Padmé romance is one that, in theory, and the idea is both beautiful and tragic. However, its execution is far from exceptional - in the movies, that is, it is far better in The Clone Wars.

The pair have no on-screen chemistry, and the awkward dialogue only serves to ruin a lot of Attack Of The Clones. Even the pair's initial meeting was terrible, with the angel line living in infamy and overall despite being perhaps the most crucial romance in all of Star Wars, it is one of the worst in terms of execution, and one hated by a lot of fans for it.

7 Finn & Rose's Romance

Anakin and Padmé's romance is not the one that has received the most hate over the past while, however, that honor goes to Finn and Rose. Their short-lived romance was one of the worst received parts of The Last Jedi and had few admirers.

Finn is a fantastic character, and Rose is also great with much less importance. But together, the pair just do not match. Their romance came out of nowhere, it ended out of nowhere, and resulted in the cheesiest line of the entire sequel trilogy, which garnered a lot of hate, even if not everyone disliked the line or romance in general.

6 Canto Bight

The Finn and Rose romance and Luke's exile did receive a lot of hate, but Luke's exile has a lot of admirers, and there some people indifferent towards Finn and Rose. Nearly every fan, however, has some form of problem with Canto Bight.

It looks phenomenal, but ultimately the storyline ended up being pointless, used only to give some sort of message and continuation of Finn's character that ultimately could have gotten done elsewhere. Other fans pointed out the lack of established species within the community as an issue, some even thought that not enough time was spent there to flesh it out, and others disliked the Fathier section of the story, especially with slaves working there also.

5 Midi-Chlorians

For years the Force was an absolute mystery. It connected everyone, some were strong in it, bound the universe together, and was a mostly unexplored and unexplained phenomenon. Fans loved the mysterious nature of Force power and skill.

In The Phantom Menace, though, the potential of the Force in an individual was revealed to be biology in the form of microscopic organisms called midi-chlorians. Fans have hated midi-chlorians for years. The reveal that midi-chlorians are the source of one's Force potential has been a sore spot for fans since 1999 and continues to be today.

4 Invasion of Naboo

The prequel trilogy has gotten far more love over the past few years as people get over a lot of issues they had with it fifteen years ago, and as a generation who grew up with them reach adulthood. There are still some aspects that get and have gotten a lot of hate.

One such aspect is the Invasion of Naboo that occurred in The Phantom Menace. It is everything encompassed in the invasion people have disliked. Jar-Jar Binks and Boss Nass have gotten very vocal hate over the years, so too have the Trade Federation, the blockade, the constant chatter of politics, and the battle between the Gungans and droids.

3 Space Whales & (Other Rebels Filler)

Rebels is a show that received a lot of hate by some fans for being too childish. It then developed into one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media with some of the most amazing stories in the franchise such as "Twin Suns," "Twilight Of The Apprentice," and "Family Reunion - And Farewell."

Not all stories are beloved; however, some are very much hated. The one that sticks out most in season two episode "The Call" and the Purgrills that have come to be known as space whales. They have been labeled as silly and too unbelievable even by Star Wars standards, as well as being unnecessary and total filler. Filler episodes, in general, are the most hated episodes of both Rebels and The Clone Wars always received vocal criticism.

2 The Clone Wars Movie

The Clone Wars series is currently in its seventh season, and the show overall is one of the best things to have ever happened in Star Wars. The movie that came right before the series, however? Not so much.

Ahsoka is one of the best characters in all of Star Wars, but in the film, she received so much hate for being childish and annoying. The story of the movie also was despised by so many, with Hutt's inclusion - particularly Ziro and Stinky - being at the heart of that, and the film simply does not represent the quality of the show.

1 The Holiday Special

This list has been all canon to this point because the Legends universe does not matter technically, it does not affect the universe anymore other than living in people's minds, and having a lot of fantastic content for consumption. Also, the Legends universe is not as popular, nor has it been consumed as much as the films and shows that are canon, and if Legends was on this list, it could get filled with stories such as "The Crystal Star," Mount Sorrow, and Luuke.

But, there is one storyline that transcends the Legends vs. canon debate in terms of how much it is hated, and that is the Star Wars Holiday Special. Every fan dislikes the television movie, even George Lucas hates it and has distanced himself from it, never allowing a rebroadcast or wide release.
