10 How To Make An American Quilt (61%)
The first two movies on this list share a rating on Rotten Tomatoes. How to Make an American Quilt has fewer reviews than the other, so it places lower. This 1995 release actually marked the feature film debut for Leto, as he held a minor role as a character named Beck.
Led by veteran actors like Winona Ryder, Dermot Mulroney, and Rip Torn, How to Make An American Quilt featured a strong cast. The film saw multiple people telling different stories as they patched together a quilt for a nervous bride. Though the storytelling technique was a bit flawed, the cast did well with it.
9 Lord Of War (61%)
Most of us understand why Nicolas Cage is the subject of memes and hilarity on the internet. However, lost in all of those things is the fact that he can be a great actor at times. Lord of War, a 2005 release, saw him reel it in with a more subdued performance than we're used to.
Cage plays an illegal arms dealer in this story that helped expose a lot of what the gun-running world is like. Leto was given a chance to play the crazed one here as he took on the role of cocaine-obsessed Vitaly. Lord of War is considered to be an intelligent film boasting a good cast.
8 Mr. Nobody (67%)
The first sci-fi movie on our list to take place in the future is Mr. Nobody. Set in 2092 (but released in 2009), this centers around the life of a man named Nemo Nobody, played by Leto. Nemo is the last mortal man on Earth after humans achieve quasi-immortality.
Using a nonlinear narrative to tell stories at multiple points in time, this is pretty much what any sci-fi fan is looking for. Though it wasn't a box-office hit, Mr. Nobody won Best Film at the Magritte Awards and has become something of a cult classic. The acting, visuals, and ambitions were all strong.
7 American Psycho (69%)
It's the film that helped thrust Christian Bale into superstardom. American Pyscho (2000) manages to blend horror, dark comedy, and a psychological thriller better than almost any other story. It follows Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie, who also happens to be a serial killer.
Leto was part of a stellar supporting cast (along with Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux) as Paul Allen. He's a Bateman victim in what might be the film's most iconic scene. With "Hip to be Square" playing loudly, Bateman delivers a monologue and murders Allen with an axe.
6 Panic Room (75%)
David Fincher has a strong case for being one of the best directors in Hollywood. One of his classic films is 2003's Panic Room. It told a contained story about a mother and daughter who are forced to hide in a panic room when their home is invaded.
While Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart portray the leads, the intruders are played by Forest Whitaker, Jared Leto, and Dwight Yoakam. The film was praised for the way it handled the tense story, Fincher's direction, and Foster's performance. It marked another home run for Fincher.
5 Requiem For A Dream (79%)
If you want to talk about intense movies, there aren't many out there that top 2000's Requiem for a Dream. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, this is one of the most realistic and harrowing looks at drug addiction. Leto portrayed Harry Goldfarb, who sees his addiction lead to the amputation of his arm.
He was kind of the central character, though we also see his girlfriend (Jennifer Connelly), best friend (Marlon Wayans), and mother (Ellen Burstyn) go through terrible ordeals for various drug addictions. Requiem for a Dream is a cult classic. Burstyn was even nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.
4 Fight Club (79%)
Once again, Jared Leto collaborates with director David Fincher and it ends up with great reviews. Released in 1999, Fight Club has become one of the most iconic cult classics in film history. The leads are Edward Norton and Brad Pitt as two characters who start running an underground fight club.
Jared Leto has a smaller role in this, playing a member of the club known as Angel Face. Still, nearly everything about this movie was met with high praise. That includes acting, production design, plot, quotable lines, and the big twist. There's a reason this holds an incredible 96% rating from the audience.
3 The Thin Red Line (80%)
World War II movies are scattered throughout the annals of cinema. It's a time period almost tailor-made for the big screen. In 1998, audiences were treated to The Thin Red Line, which told a fictionalized version of the Battle of Mount Austen. It marked one of the earliest performances for Jared Leto.
Alongside major stars like Sean Penn, George Clooney, Adrien Brody, Woody Harrelson, John Travolta, and more, Leto portrayed 2nd Lt. William Whyte. Sadly, his character is one of the first killed in the movie. The Thin Red Line was praised for being a daring take on World War II and featuring a talented cast.
2 Blade Runner 2049 (87%)
The follow-up to the 1982 sci-fi classic, Blade Runner 2049 is widely considered one of the best films released in 2017. Directed by the incredible Denis Villeneuve, it managed to capture the feel of the original while bringing everything into a new age. The visuals, acting, storyline, and acting were all considered to be strong aspects.
Jared Leto took on the role of Niander Wallace, a corporate CEO out to use the secret of replicant reproduction for personal gain. He was the film's main antagonist. Boasting a cast including Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and Ana de Armas, it's no wonder this film was so well-received. It also took home two Academy Awards.
1 Dallas Buyers Club (93%)
It's only fitting that Dallas Buyers Club tops this list. The 2013 release featured the role that earned Jared Leto his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In it, he played Rayon, a transgender woman diagnosed with AIDS. For the role, Leto shaved his eyebrows, waxed his body, met with transgender people, and lost 30 pounds.
The film took place in the 1980s at a time when AIDS treatment was underdeveloped. It focused on an AIDS patient who smuggled illegal drugs into the country to help people with the disease against the wishes of the Food and Drug Administration. Along with Leto, Matthew McConaughey earned the Best Actor statue at the Oscars.
