While everyone loves the Jedi so much in the Star Wars universe, there is also a huge fan following for their mortal enemies, the Sith. They are the main villains in the galaxy and intimidate everyone they meet. After all, no one's really safe from their ideals and wrath.
There have been tons of terrifying, tremendous Sith Lords throughout the entire Star Wars lore.
However, in the original trilogy, fans only met two Sith, and they've since become the most beloved bad guys in the galaxy: Darth Vader and Darth Sidious, AKA Emperor Palpatine.
But which one is the best?
10 Darth Vader Has The Muscle
When the Empire reigned supreme over the galaxy, it was Darth Vader who traveled system to system. He tracked down fugitives, destroyed rebellion cells, and ended the lives of any enemy of the Empire. His name became synonymous with fear and loathing across planets.
The Emperor was always a strong Sith, but he just doesn't have the brute strength or stamina to keep fighting off waves of people like Vader did. The people feared him as a concept, but they feared Vader as this boogeyman with an endlessly bloody blade.
No one wanted to hear Darth Vader was nearby.
9 Palpatine Has The Influence
While his subject feared Darth Vader breaking down their doors, The Emperor was always the one with the real influence. He had several back-up apprentices, he also knew about all of Darth Vader's, and he kept tabs on everything in the galaxy. Few things happened that he wasn't actively trying to hunt down and destroy.
Also, Palpatine was the one with ambition. He made the connections that led to his great Empire, and he was the reason it became such a vast power. If Vader was in charge, he just would've wanted to focus on keeping his family safe and alive. His darkness was never insidious, only Palpatine's was.
8 Darth Vader Tormented And Tried To Turn His Children
The Emperor clearly failed to have any influence over his own child(ren), and it didn't seem like he had much interest in them much, either. No one really knows their story because he didn't even seem to care.
Vader, on the other hand, became obsessed with his children once he realized they existed. He wanted them on his side, wanted to protect them since he couldn't protect Padme.
However, as a Sith, he did it in dark, demented ways where he tormented them and tried to force them to join him. If he can do that to his loved ones, he's a much more compelling (and twisted) villain.
7 Palpatine Has Plots Within Plots
Even when he was Senator Palpatine, not the Emperor, he had plans within plans to get the galaxy in disarray and under his spell. The clones, his senate standing, the Separatists, he orchestrated all of it to place himself in power. And that's just the plans that were deliberate and ambitious. Those don't include his "just in case of disaster" plots.
He even had an Emperor cult to bring him back if he ever needed it.
A paranoid old man, Palpatine was frighteningly good at putting together back-up plans to protect his own interests.
That's a twisted bad guy for you.
6 Darth Vader Obliterated Alderaan
While Palpatine ordered the construction of the Death Stars, it was Darth Vader who had control over them. Particularly the first one. And while he was commanding the giant ball of doom, he was the one calling the shots. When he brought the vessel to Alderaan, it was his choice to destroy the planet just to make a point.
Yikes. That's one seriously wicked threat.
Also, he didn't know Leia was his daughter, but blowing up her home-world and entire family was pretty brutal thing to do right before her eyes.
5 Palpatine Destroyed The Jedi Order
Using his power over the clone troopers and his insidious influence in the senate, shutting down any fears about the clones, Palpatine executed Order 66. This had every clone trooper gunning down their Jedi commander and effectively massacred the highly militaristic Jedi Order. He gave them a free army and they fell for it. As far as mind games with firepower behind it, Palpatine pulled it off flawlessly.
He also ordered his apprentice to hunt down the remnants for years, almost taking out the Jedi completely. Other than the little bits Yoda and Obi-Wan passed down to Luke, he succeeded.
4 Darth Vader Betrayed The Jedi Order
While Palpatine was the trigger-man, Darth Vader was the lynchpin that pulled it all together. He was the one who destroyed the younglings and the libraries, the past and future of the Jedi Order. Without his betrayal, they could have had a shot to survive. However, the Jedi Master once known as Anakin Skywalker destroyed his people from the inside out.
Also, everyone should take a moment to remember that he casually slew a whole temple full of children. That's evil, on a new level. Palpatine would've done it, but the fact Vader did do it tarnishes his soul forever.
3 Palpatine Has The Laugh
This sounds superficial, but Vader always struggled with his darkness, even when he was a bad guy chopping down innocents. Palpatine never has had that problem. He revels in being evil. And of all his traits, his laugh is the epitome of all that. He cackles in absolute joy when his plans fall into place, ruining the lives of others as it pleases him.
He even laughed like that when Luke Skywalker refused his offer, because it meant he'd get to watch his apprentice cut down his own son.
That is a man evil to his absolute core.
2 Darth Vader Was The Chosen One
When the Jedi Order were at the height of their power, in charge of the Republic army, many Jedi assumed Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One who would bring balance to the force. Between his natural talent as a child and his influence on people, it seemed like an obvious truth.
However, then Anakin turned to the dark side.
The fact Anakin once was such a revered, good hero and so many people believed in him being a savior, it only makes his fall to darkness all the worse. He didn't just betray the Order, but everything people thought of him.
1 Palpatine Has A Cult
Darth Vader just has one edgy grandson obsessed with his legacy. Darth Sidious had an entire, creepy dark-side cult willing to do anything in his name. Did everyone see those giant pillars and statues to the Emperor? Those guys were seriously committed. Kylo Ren looked like a lazy, wet blanket next to them.
Now, no one really understands said cult well or how it happened or why they are such good mechanics and geneticists, but nonetheless. It exists and the Emperor was a cause.
You have to admit only really messed up, evil people start cults.
