Throughout The Mindy Project's six seasons, fans have noticed a ton of dead-end storylines, plotholes, and disappearing characters. The Mindy Kaling show was a hit but was poorly (or quickly) written in many aspects.
Due to the show's quick ending, there were multiple storylines that just didn't make sense or seemed unnecessary. Was this due to lazy writers or was it the network's doing in shuffling around episodes? Nevertheless, we found 10 storylines that left The Mindy Project fans scratching their heads.
11 Getting Pregnant And Having Leo
Fans of The Mindy Project learn early on (in the episode where Danny is her gynecologist) that Mindy wanted to become a mother one day. The possibility of her becoming a mom was always there but fans didn't expect it to happen the way that it did.
While Leo is cute and becoming parents threw a wrench into things regarding Mindy and Danny, the show lost its spunk once he came into the picture. What made the show fantastic was the wild shenanigans Mindy found herself in and that slowly stopped when she became a mom.
10 Marrying Ben So Quickly
Why oh why did Mindy have to marry Ben? Ben was adorable and perfect for Mindy but the short relationship seemed so forced, so sudden.
She was just getting over Danny, she's getting used to becoming a single mom and balancing work, and now she's ready to get married to a man she barely knew? It just didn't make sense.
9 Moving To California (Without Discussing Anything With Danny)
After having the opportunity to start a practice in San Francisco, Mindy jumps at the idea of her living on the West Coast. But to Danny's surprise, she still wants to continue with this fantasy when she finds herself pregnant. To make everything more confusing, Mindy practically decides to stay in California without discussing it fully with Danny or her other partners in New York.
We all know Mindy can be impulsive and selfish but her wanting to stay in California sounded like the end of her relationship with Danny (had he not decided to move there for her) and her job in New York.
8 Rishi's Rap Career
Mindy is the proud daughter of two immigrant parents and is the older sister of her brother Rishi. She noted that she's footing the bill for her brother's education and is astounded when she learns he dropped out to focus on his music career.
Seeing all of Mindy's hard-earned money get flushed down the toilet, only to have her brother chase his rap dreams seemed totally unnecessary. What's even more annoying is we didn't see much of Rishi after that point. What was the point of the episode then?
7 Beverly's Son Coming Back Into Her Life
Beverly is a comical background character in the show who didn't have too many major storylines but in the sixth season, she had a big one when her son came back into her life.
Mindy meets a handsome stranger outside her office and tries to win him over. And oddly enough, he was very interested in her job and the people she worked with. It turns out that this mysterious stranger was actually Beverly's son and he came back to meet her in person after years apart. What could have been a sweet episode between mother and son became weird when Beverley admitted to leaving him on a doorstep and ran away from him at Morgan's party.
6 Why Did Danny Transform Into A Misogynist?
To be fair, Danny has always been a meathead who has made rude comments about Mindy's weight and eating habits but after the two became engaged and had Leo, his personality got worse.
He all of a sudden wanted Mindy to throw away everything she worked for to become a stay-at-home mom and judged her for being the exact same person she was when he met her. If anyone changed between the two, it was Danny. His misogynistic attitude became insufferable by the end of the series.
5 Why Did Mindy Have To Start Relationships with Jeremy And Jody?
Mindy and Jeremy had a little thing towards the beginning of the series, which seems unfathomable as the series moved forward.
And if that wasn't weird enough, Mindy and Jody started hooking up, creating the strangest twist in the series considering Mindy and Jody didn't always get along. He's also incredibly insensitive, making this relationship very unnecessary.
4 Peter Moving To Texas
It's not strange for characters to vanish from The Mindy Project. There have been countless times characters randomly appear or disappear without so much as an explanation. But for Peter to up and leave the practice for a life in Texas with a woman who's played around with his heart for months?
It all seemed so desperate and too soon. It's one thing for Peter to move on his own to find himself but to move to Texas for a woman who was also with his boss? Peter deserved better.
3 Tamra Deserved A Personality Glow Up
When we first met Tamra (again, with no explanation where she came from), her character seemed uneducated, immature, and totally unequipped for her job. It was actually upsetting to see another woman of color in the show being represented in such a way.
Tamra was a great character and deserved better. Thankfully, her character transformed into the woman she was always meant to be but misrepresenting her, in the beginning, was low.
2 What Was The Point Of Mindy's Mentorships?
We saw Mindy become a mentor for young women throughout the series on different occasions. But when you really think about it, what was the point? We didn't see the women she mentored past the one episode they were both in and she never talked about the mentorships again.
We never got to see how these women turned out either, which is a big point of mentorships to begin with. We all know Mindy is a great mentor but it seemed unnecessary to show the women she's mentoring if there were no follow ups.
1 Jeremy's Character Change
At the beginning of The Mindy Project, Jeremy was confident, brilliant, in shape, and a little smug. Among Danny and Mindy, he was a great balance for the group. But as the series went on, Jeremy's character changed.
He became totally insecure, gained weight, and forgot how to pick up women. It was the complete opposite of the person we first met. Towards the end of the series, Jeremy gets his groove back and becomes more of the man we first met but was it really necessary for his personality to shift so much?
