Netflix has hit a home run with their successful British comedy series Sex Education. Starring the likes of Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, and Emma Mackey, the show has become a success in the eyes of audiences and critics alike. It follows a teen boy who, with the help of the rebellious girl he's crushing on, opens a sex advice clinic in his school.
Sex Education has been praised for its acting, writing, dialogue, themes, LGBTQ+ representation, and more. To figure out the cream of the crop for the series through two seasons, we're taking a look at the ratings given to episodes on IMDb and ranking them based on it.
10 Episode 1.4 (8.2)
This is an interesting show in terms of episode titles, with each simply corresponding to the number in the season. Season one's "Episode 4" put Otis in a tough position. His best friend Eric pointed out that he was in love with Maeve but Otis refused to admit it. He had to confront it when the school's star came up to him.
Jackson asked Otis for advice on how to woo Maeve. He purposely gave him bad information but it backfired when Maeve liked it. The highlight of this installment was probably Otis and Maeve's playful interaction in the pool, which caused Otis to admit to Eric that he had feelings for her.
9 Episode 2.1 (8.3)
The second season kicked off with a lengthy montage of Otis masturbating. Yes, you read that right. It makes sense given the way that season one ended. This had to pick up where those episodes left off and set up the show going forward. That included some intriguing new places for the characters.
Maeve was working at a pretzel shop when she encountered her drug addict mother. Otis looked to re-open the clinic with Eric as his partner. Jean was needed at the school to help with a chlamydia outbreak. It ultimately culminated in Otis and Maeve getting their team back together.
8 Episode 2.4 (8.4)
For many fans, this was kind of the episode they had been waiting for. Maeve struggled with being vulnerable and admitting her feelings for Otis to him. In this installment, Otis helped look after her half-sister while she competed in an academic competition. Once that was over, Maeve opened up.
She poured her heart out to Otis, who responded by admitting his past feelings. However, he was also angry because she chose the worst time to say this, as he was on his way to losing his virginity to Ola. It caused a major rift in their relationship. Elsewhere, Adam and Eric finally shared a kiss after a romantic evening together.
7 Episode 2.3 (8.4)
With 1,498 ratings, this episode holds a slight edge over the one that followed it. The main focus here was on Aimee, as her bus ride to school was ruined when a man masturbated on her. She seemed unbothered by it but Maeve got her to go to the police station to report it.
As the hour ended, Aimee broke down alone at home, showing that it clearly affected her. The episode also gave us the hilariously awkward dinner between Otis, Jean, Jakob, and Ola, as well as a fun storyline involving Olivia and her intimacy issues with her boyfriend.
6 Episode 1.8 (8.4)
Season one ended with a bang and this episode was reviewed by 2,291 users. Following the dramatic events at the school dance, Otis and Maeve saw their relationship fractured. However, he sent her the essay prize that was rightfully hers and she was smitten. She rushed off to confess her love for him.
Unfortunately, she arrived to see Otis kissing Ola, giving fans the cliffhanger ending to the season. This episode also saw Eric and Adam surprise everyone by hooking up during detention. Their potential romance was stymied when Adam arrived home to find that he was being shipped to military school.
5 Episode 1.3 (8.4)
With 2,547 ratings, this episode tops the entries tied with the 8.4 score on IMDb. It received praise for the way it handled the controversial subject of abortion. Maeve opted to go that route after finding out that she was pregnant with Jackson's baby. All she needed was someone to take her home afterward.
Maeve selected Otis, who thought they were meeting up for a date. She chastised him when he arrived but was surprised and touched that he still stuck around for her. The way Maeve dealt with this ordeal and the bond she formed with a woman at the clinic were highlights.
4 Episode 2.6 (8.6)
Although Otis agreed to break contact with Maeve at the request of Ola, Ola dumped him. That left him without both ladies in his life. To get over it, he threw a party and found a way for both girls to show up for different reasons. Unfortunately, Otis got ridiculously drunk.
That led him to make an announcement in front of everyone where he explained his emotions towards Ola and Maeve. The end result hurt the feelings of both of them. The party was also the setting for Jackson's emotional breakdown over the pressure he was under.
3 Episode 1.7 (8.7)
The penultimate episode of season one brought us to the school dance. Maeve got all dolled up but Jackson was distracted and didn't even notice. Otis did, but he was on a date with Ola. Maeve and Ola had their first interaction and it led to Otis saying the wrong thing to Ola, causing her to leave.
Otis then delivered an emotionally rousing speech to help a fellow student but it paralleled his feelings for Maeve. Their potentially sweet moment was ruined when Jackson revealed that he went to Otis for advice on how to woo Maeve. We also got the major moment of Eric showing who he truly is and sharing a connection with his father.
2 Episode 1.5 (8.8)
On the sex clinic side of things, Otis and Maeve helped popular mean girl Ruby when an explicit photo of her is sent around. Her face isn't in the photo but before the person in the photo can become public, the women in the school all stand up and admit it belongs to them. It's a masterful display of women being there for each other.
On the friendship side, things between Otis and Eric reached a boiling point. Otis chose to help Maeve, leaving Eric alone on his birthday and dressed like a woman. Eric gets robbed and beaten, all the while Otis is having a good time. The two argued and didn't speak again for several episodes.
1 Episode 2.7 (9.1)
Following his party, Otis woke up in bed next to Ruby, who he unexpectedly lost his virginity to the night before. The two weren't sure if a condom was used, so they spent the day together getting the morning after pill. The surprising scenes between them turned out to be incredibly moving.
The other plot involved Maeve, Ola, Aimee, Viv, Lily, and Olivia held in detention. It paid homage to The Breakfast Club and saw the girls bond over shared experiences of sexual assault after Aimee broke down about what happened to her. They ended the episode by all joining Aimee for a bus ride to help her get over her issues.
