Why Kevin Bacon's Tremors TV Show Was Canceled | Screen Rant

Kevin Bacon was set to star in a new Tremors TV show, to the delight of fans, at least until Syfy abruptly canceled the project before it even aired. While the majority of its life has been spent on home video, there's no doubt Tremors is a successful creature feature franchise with a devoted fanbase. Six Tremors films has been released so far, with a seventh soon to arrive. Bacon memorably played the lead in the first Tremors, a handyman living in Perfection, Nevada named Val McKee.

While Bacon's co-star Fred Ward would return to star as Earl Bassett in Tremors 2, and supporting character Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) would graduate to lead for the sequels since, Bacon's Val never returned to the franchise. It was mentioned in passing during Tremors 2 that Val had gotten married and moved far, far away from Perfection, but that was the most fans ever learned of his life after Graboids. That looked to finally be rectified with a Tremors TV project, which was planned to feature the return of Bacon to the franchise he helped kick off.

Alas, the TV series starring Bacon didn't come to pass, once again preventing fans from catching up with Tremors' original hero. Many people were shocked when Bacon's Tremors pilot wasn't picked up to series, and here's a look at why that might've occurred.

The almost made Tremors TV series, in which Kevin Bacon would've both executive produced and starred, was first announced is being in the works back in 2015. By 2016, the project was moving forward at Amazon Prime, but the streaming service ended up passing on it. Syfy picked the potential show up, and commissioned a pilot directed by Cube helmer Vincenzo Natali. The pilot was filmed in fall 2017, but by spring 2018, Bacon himself revealed that the series wasn't moving forward. As of this writing, the pilot hasn't been made available for fans to watch, outside of a one-off film festival screening.

Syfy never revealed a firm reason for its decision to cancel Tremors before it premiered, but there are a few logical possibilities. For one, there's Kevin Bacon's paycheck. Bacon is primarily known as a movie star, and his prior TV roles have been on the big broadcast networks or premium cable and streaming services, most of which are willing to put out lots of money to make their original programming. Syfy, on the other hand, tends to make its original dramas on the cheap. Even if he didn't command a large sum, it's possible the needed effects budget to create the Graboids and have them attack would prove cost prohibitive on an ongoing basis. There's also the possibility Syfy thought the Tremors pilot was just plain bad, but according to several people involved with the production, it tested very well with audiences. We may never know for certain what happened, but at the very least, rights holder Universal should allow fans to check out the pilot, and possibly show enough interest to warrant the show's resurrection.
