The cast of The Matrix 4 is growing and will include the return of Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian. It's been nearly 17 years since both Matrix sequels arrived in theaters just a few months apart, and it appeared the lesser quality of them ended the expansive world after three films. The outlook of the Matrix franchise officially changed last year, when it was announced that Keanu Reeves was returning to star as Neo in a fourth entry.
Directed and written by Lana Wachowski, details on The Matrix 4 have remained tightly guarded. Neo's return is notable considering how his story appeared to end in The Matrix Revolutions and the same is true about Carrie Anne-Moss returning as Trinity. With both Neo and Trinity returning, many have wondered what other familiar characters Wachowski could fold into the new story. There were already reports that Jada Pinkett Smith will return as Niobe, and now one more franchise veteran is going to appear as well.
According to a report by Allocine (via The Playlist), Lambert Wilson will likely return as The Merovingian in The Matrix 4. The character is said to be in the script for the fourth film, but Wilson is only in negotiations to return. There is some concern with his schedule to make the appearance work, as The Matrix 4 begins filming sometime this year. The Merovingian was featured in both The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions.
The Merovingian returning for The Matrix 4 is another sign that the film will once again explore the intricacies of the Matrix. The character was previously said to be one of the oldest programs that exist. He is a trafficker of information and leads a crime syndicate alongside his wife Persephone (Monica Bellucci). Neo and Trinity met The Merovingian in The Matrix Reloaded to discuss the Keymaker, and Trinity paid him another visit in Revolutions to free Neo. His history with the two fallen franchise leads could be telling, along with The Merovingian's past of providing a safe haven for programs that were no longer needed.
As a result, it is possible that The Merovingian could be a key piece to the story of The Matrix 4. Speculation has persisted that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a younger version of Morpheus, and the involvement of a young Morpheus along with a resurrected Neo and Trinity could point to the Matrix being rebooted again or someone trying to repair a previous version of the simulation. Given The Merovingian's well-documented roots within the Matrix, it would make sense that he could be needed to accomplish some version of these tasks. Of course, that is all merely speculation at the moment since so few plot details have surfaced so far, but The Merovingian being in The Matrix 4 is something fans can now expect.
