The Hunger Games: 10 Most Shameless Things Gale Ever Did

Gale Hawthorne is one of the male protagonists in The Hunger Games franchise. He was Katniss's best friend and closest confidante for many years as they grew up together in District 12. Together, they would hunt and look out for each other's families.

There was nothing that Gale and Katniss wouldn't do for each other. He was very different from Peeta Mellark, more rugged and forceful. He was forced to make a lot of difficult decisions throughout the series and did a lot of brazen, shameless, and sometimes reckless things to get things accomplished.

10 Gale was prepared to fight the Capitol from the beginning

Gale was always ready to fight the Capitol. When things became dire, he was always prepared to fight instead of running away. Gale lost a lot of people because of the Capitol and he watched firsthand as families were torn apart and brutalized by the imperialistic authority.

There were times when Katniss wanted to run away, and Gale would instead try to motivate her to fight and rebel against the Capitol. He was incredibly tough and pretty much tailor-made for the war and the fight.

9 He applied for tessera often

For the Reaping, names would be chosen from a pool of candidates in each district. Names would go into the pool based on how often they submitted their name for tesserae, which is a type of food rationing that would get families more food and grain for a year.

However, to get tesserae, one would have to put their name into the Reaping drawing. Gale signed up more than 40 times, both so he would lessen the odds of his younger siblings and to keep his family provided for in terms of food.

8 He kisses Katniss

After the first Hunger Games, Katniss and Gale had an extremely emotional reunion. Gale gets caught up in the moment and kisses her, saying he felt he had to do it, "at least once." Unfortunately, the kiss has consequences since Snow discovers it and uses it against Katniss during the second book/movie.

He tells Katniss that she shouldn't "flaunt" her affection for Gale and makes her double down on proving to the world she is really in love with Peeta, which causes problems between her and Gale, too.

7 He hunted and poached illegally

Both Gale and Katniss did a lot of illegal hunting and poaching in their time, even before Katniss became enlisted for the deadly tournament. They would hunt wild turkey and other animals to keep food on the table.

Gale often provided food for Katniss's family and vice versa, as they were also keen to help each other out. Sadly, at one point Gale was caught hunting and he received a brutal public lashing from the Peacekeepers. That incident helped make him even more eager to take down the Capitol.

6 He admits to being in love with Katniss

Not only is Gale brave, but he can be blunt and passionate about what he wants too. He fell in love with Katniss and openly admitted it to her in the second book. It was difficult for Katniss to process because her life has been categorized by trauma.

For her, romantic feelings were not necessarily an option and she did her best to navigate the murky waters between Peeta and Gale, both men who loved her and who she had complicated feelings for in return.

5 He had plans to run away

While the majority of the time, Gale would rather fight than run away, early in the series, before he becomes more hardened and vigilant against the Capitol, Gale offers to run away with Katniss. He tells her they could avoid the Reaping altogether and go somewhere far away.

They both know they could never do that though as neither would willingly leave their families behind. Gale and Katniss were the main breadwinners and providers for their homes and they're not selfish enough to abandon them.

4 He joined the rebellion in District 13

While Katniss was forced to compete in yet another Hunger Games, Gale became part of the rebellion and led a lot of people to District 13. He did his best to fight back against the Capitol at any cost.

He was an integral member of the rebellion and hugely important to District 13 once he began to commit himself fully to the cause. While Gale was always a very brave and stubborn man, that became even more prevalent in the third book of the series as he toughened up even more.

3 Gale began forging weapons with Beetee

Part of his job in District 13 was to design weapons alongside Beetee. Together they came up with some very violent means of targeting their enemies. This caused a problem with Katniss, who was shocked by some of the ideas Gale had come up with.

Sadly, one of Gale's designs may have been utilized in the attack that ultimately murdered Prim, therefore altering the relationship between the two of them forever. Gale was trying to play by President Snow's playbook and it, unfortunately, backfired against him.

2 Gale is the first to volunteer for a dangerous rescue mission

Despite his feelings for Katniss and his rivalry with Peeta, Gale was the very first person to volunteer for a dangerous rescue mission to retrieve Peeta and Johanna from the Capitol's clutches.

He could have easily been killed on the mission so it might have been a shameless or reckless thing to do, but Gale did it anyway as a way to prove himself, both to Katniss and to those around him, that he was a fierce leader and unwilling to let the Capitol take more people away from them.

1 Gale is part of the Star Squad to assassinate Snow

Gale is part of the Star Squad along with people like Katniss and Finnick as they attempt to take down the Capitol and President Snow once and for all. Unfortunately, the mission goes a little haywire and Gale winds up getting captured.

Katniss is unable to bring herself to shoot Gale. He also can't bring himself to kill her after she shoots an arrow at President Coin later on. But Gale was willing to go to the ends of the earth to ensure the Capitol was finished once and for all, no matter the cost.
