The Batman: Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman Inspired by Michelle Pfeiffer's Iconic Take

Zoë Kravitz is basing her role in the upcoming film The Batman on Michelle Pfeiffer's iconic portrayal of Catwoman from 1992's Batman ReturnsKravitz, who voiced Mary-Jane in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, has had a number of memorable on-screen and voice roles throughout her career, including her performances in the Harry Potter spin-off film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and It's Kind of a Funny Story, among many others.

Recently, the actress showed off her upcoming Catwoman hairstyle for The Batman film, which is yet another new take on the classic superhero, this time from director Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. With Colin Farrell playing The Penguin and Westworld alum Jeffery Wright as Commissioner Gordon, The Batman is at least featuring a star-studded cast, although most of the details about the film's plot and any possible connections with other entries in the DC Comics film universe have been kept rather quiet.

Now, thanks to a new report by Varietyexcited fans now know exactly where Kravitz took inspiration from when getting ready to portray Catwoman on screen, and it definitely wasn't from the comic books. "I was never into a lot of the comic books, but that world was always very intriguing to me," Kravitz said, speaking to reporters after a TCA panel. "I think Catwoman is an iconic character... and then of course Michelle Pfeiffer - her performance has always been super inspiring to me."

Kravitz's respect of Pfeiffer is well documented, as she once admitted on The Ellen Show that the Catwoman actress was scared to meet Michelle Pfeiffer when they were introduced for the first time. Pfeiffer herself was also happy to meet Kravitz, and even gave the actress some encouraging words of advice while appearing on television to promote her own film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which was to "make sure, while designing the costume, they consider how you're going to go to the bathroom."

With The Batman set to premiere in 2021 and the film currently shooting in London, it won't be long before fans get to see just how much of Michelle Pfeiffer's iconic attitude will be present in Zoë Kravitz's Catwoman portrayal. Having already voiced Catwoman in The Lego Batman Movie, Kravitz surely has a strong grasp of the character already, and as long as she takes her idol's advice and makes sure her costume designers make it possible for her to relieve herself whenever necessary, things are looking quite good for her upcoming role in The Batman.
