Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker TV Spot Spoils Ben Solo's Redemption

A new TV spot for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been released, spoiling Kylo Ren's redemption. Released one month ago, the latest Star Wars feature concluded the saga that began in 1977's A New Hope. Last week, The Rise of Skywalker surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

It is fascinating to analyze reception before and after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. The first trailer teased the return of Emperor Palpatine, something that generated a ton of buzz on social media. After the very divisive response of The Last Jedi, fans were ready for a satisfying conclusion. However, upon release, The Rise of Skywalker did not see a lot of positive reception. As of last week, the film is the lowest-rated main Star Wars film on Rotten Tomatoes, falling under The Phantom Menace. One of the most important character arcs the film had the job of concluding was Ben Solo's. Perhaps unexpectedly for some, he was redeemed in The Rise of Skywalker, something that is spoiled in a new TV spot.

The Star Wars Instagram account has uploaded a new TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker. Although the footage is brief, it does show Ben wielding the blue lightsaber alongside Rey. Some fans may be surprised the company would spoil a pivotal scene. However, Avengers: Endgame did the same thing by spoiling key scenes from the climax in a TV spot. Check out the new Rise of Skywalker TV spot below.

Although the TV spot shows Rey and Ben together, it does not detail how Ben is redeemed. In the film, Ben is reached out by his mother, Princess Leia, as she passes away. Soon after, Ben has a "conversation" with his deceased father, Han Solo. It's after this key scene that Ben throws his lightsaber into the ocean, which serves as a bridge from his Supreme Leader persona into an ally of Rey's.

Many have criticized The Rise of Skywalker as feeling disjointed from The Last Jedi. While Ben's redemption does have emotional value, one might feel it was rushed since he just became Supreme Leader at the end of The Last Jedi. Still, The Rise of Skywalker managed to conclude the overall saga with almost no loose threads. It's not all negativity in the Star Wars fandom. The Mandalorian has been received extremely well, and is getting a second season later this fall. It seems Star Wars has a bright future on streaming. It remains to be seen what Disney does with the franchise on the big screen after the lukewarm response of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
