SNL Alum Taran Killam Writing Spider-Verse Cowboy Comic

Live from New York it’s... your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? While he may be most known for his work as a comedic actor on such shows as Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, and Single Parents, Taran Killam is also an established writer—a talent he will be showcasing in the upcoming western-themed Spider-Verse #4, out January 29.

Killam’s debut in the House of Ideas is something the SNL alum has looked forward to all his life. And considering just how long Taran’s acting career has spanned (first appearing as a young boy in Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult), the fact that he still fanboys over the thought of writing a Spider-Man comic is exactly the reason he’s the right man to write said comic.

I’m a lifelong Spider-Man fan,” Killam said in an interview published on Marvel.com. “In fact the AOL email account I’ve had since I was twelve is a version of Spider-Man. (Who knew 57 people chose Spiddooomen@aol.com before me?).” Taran will “costar” on the book with artist Juan Gedeon, whose previous works include Web of Venom and his own Image Comics series Horizon. Like his colleague, Gedeon also got his start in the entertainment industry—drawing storyboards for commercials straight out of high school. Juan is known for his heavy-hitting action sequences, so having him draw Spider-Verse #4 (a gritty western tale) is a smart choice.

Speaking of westerns, Taran also mentioned his love for the genre during his interview. He claimed that when the “fine folks at Marvel” asked if he wanted to write a Spider-Verse issue featuring Webslinger, he said “yes faster than a mustang in the eye of a cyclone” (which may or may not be a rejected line of dialogue from the comic).

If Killam needs any further geek credit to his name, he was such a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise that he successfully lobbied for a role in the 2014 film produced by Michael Bay. And in 2017, Killam took over the role of King George III in the Broadway musical Hamilton. And now it appears he can add Spider-Man writer to his very long resume.

When it comes to Spider-Man titles, heart and humor should always be at the center, and Taran Killam puts both into his craft. It will be interesting to see what Killam does with his childhood hero (or at least the Wild West version of him). The whole concept of a “Spider-Verse” is as magical as it is absurd, so who better to write an action-packed Spider-Man western than a hardcore Spidey fanboy with a sense of humor? Hopefully this is just the start of Killam’s career in superhero books.
