At CCXP Sao Paulo, Amazon unveiled a teaser trailer for Season 2 of The Boys. It's been just five months since The Boys Season 1 released on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service, but since the show was such an enormous success, with data/analytics proving it's more successful than any Marvel or Netflix show, Amazon has fast-tracked Season 2.
The Boys is based off a comic book series of the same name written by Garth Ennis, who also wrote Preacher. In 2017, Amazon acquired exclusive rights to The Boys and ordered a series immediately. It didn't take long for The Boys to take off internally at Amazon, with reports that some executives were so thrilled with the show that they renewed it before The Boys Season 1 even premiered. When The Boys did premiere in July 2019, it received largely positive reviews in due to its strong cast (Karl Urban, Anthony Starr, Erin Moriarty), well-regarded directors (Eric Kripke, Dan Trachtenberg) and the show's strong, distinct style.
The teaser trailer for The Boys Season 2 is here, and it's got more blood and "supes" than ever before. Although initially revealed at CCXP, it's now available to watch online via YouTube. You'll notice much of the cast from Season 1 has returned, such as Homelander, Starlight, and Huey and the boys, but there are also new faces as well. Giancarlo Esposito's character, Mr. Edgar, also seems to have a much larger role. One confirmed character who doesn't make an appearance in the teaser is Stormfront, a former Nazi youth who may be just as evil as Homelander.
The trailer begins with a blurry superhero descending down towards the camera. As he comes into focus, it's revealed to be Homelander, bloody and bruised, returning to the locale where Season 1 ended. About 20 seconds in, Butcher's dog Terror is finally shown. Then, the trailer cuts between Butcher drinking a glass of whiskey and Homelander drinking a bottle of milk. From there, absolute chaos ensues. The Boys Season 1 was widely know for its graphic content and gruesome violence, and judging by Season 2's teaser, it doesn't seem like the show is going to concede any of those qualities which made it stand out.
There's plenty of content for The Boys to draw upon, with dozens and dozens of existing comics in existence. It's also nice to see Amazon get behind a show that isn't afraid to address sensitive, timely pertinent issues. For example, the show was praised for the ways in which it dealt with sexual assault. It's not known exactly how close The Boys will follow the comics in the coming seasons, but judging by the Season 2 trailer, it's sure to be a bloody, rollicking ride.
