The Batman Just Died His Saddest Death EVER | Screen Rant

Batman has always seemed destined to die during one last heroic moment. The caped crusader has put his life on the line more than once to save innocent people in a moment of chaos. Batman's latest death wasn't as noble as you'd expect as he died sitting on his couch.

In Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, and Rus Wooton, Wonder Woman awakes from being in some sort of cryostasis in the Batcave to an Earth that's been ravaged by some sort of nuclear-like event where atom bombs "burned the whole world." The nuclear fallout has led to genetic mutations, hunger, and unrest among those who survived. It's truly a story about Wonder Woman navigating through a post-apocalyptic world and discovering everything around her has changed.

Diana explores what's left of the Batcave and something catches the corner of her eye when she passes the ravaged living quarters. She finds a skeleton of what's presumed to be Bruce Wayne laying on a couch almost in full costume. Bruce's skull can be seen through his cowl, his bones visibly exposed in his legs and his cape half-shredded.

It is hard to guess what actually happened with the events that caused the Earth to burn not yet fully explained. One of the kid's Diana travels with explains there was a big war, followed by "The Great Fire," where the (thought to be) atom bombs were dropped. Earth is not what it used to be and hasn't been the same for a long while. Without her powers and gauntlets, Diana grabs Batman's utility belt and picks a suit of armor hanging on Bruce's wall. Through her old friend, she finds the necessary protection against the unknown outside Wayne Manor.

Perhaps, Bruce took one last look around Wayne Manor and finally got a chance to rest his legs before getting obliterated by the nuclear holocaust outside. It wouldn't make a ton of sense for him to put on the bat suit randomly and watch television on his couch. Even if it's not a sacrificial death, It's hard to believe Batman went out chilling on his couch in the suit. Although, maybe that's what in fact happened and illustrates just what Bruce was up against. Maybe, he had no chance of winning the fight outside and just gave up. There are tons of potential scenarios that make it all incredibly sad.

It will be fascinating to see if Warren Johnson ever explains what happened to Batman - although not at all necessary. Batman seemingly died on his couch sheltered from the hellscape outside. Unless this is all one big fake-out and it's not Bruce on the couch, it's an incredibly sad way for one of DC's biggest heroes to go out. In this post-apocalyptic future, Batman probably won't be coming back.
