Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has scenes which may cause seizures, Disney warns. The upcoming final chapter of the newest Star Wars trilogy is arguably the most anticipated one yet, with J.J. Abrams once again directing.
When the new series first kicked off with Abrams’ The Force Awakens back in 2015, many Star Wars fans were delighted with what they saw. The film had its share of detractors, of course, but for the first entry in Disney’s planned trilogy, there appeared to be an abundance of promise. Despite having the infamous reputation for being the film in which beloved smuggler Han Solo died, The Force Awakens went on to become one of the highest grossing films of all time. With that sort of momentum behind it, anticipation was extremely high for the 2017 follow up, The Last Jedi. Though the film made some exciting choices and showcased a side of Star Wars which was both familiar and new, it left a sizable divide in opinion among fans of the franchise.
Now, as The Rise of Skywalker prepares to launch in a matter of weeks, excitement for the final installment is high, and many fans are particularly happy about the return of J.J. Abrams as director. However, it seems like every Star Wars film has its own issues which can potentially cause a ripple of panic. According to THR, Disney is now doing everything it can to get the word out to cinema owners certain visual effects in The Rise of Skywalker, as well as sustained flashing lights sequences, could cause seizures in those with photosensitive epilepsy. Aside from Disney requesting theater owners warn their patrons beforehand, they have also notified the Epilepsy Foundation, which is now working to get the word out. In addition to these steps, Disney has written a letter to theaters screening The Rise of Skywalker. The letter states:
"Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that you provide at your venue box office and online, and at other appropriate places where your customers will see it, a notice containing the following information: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker contains several sequences with imagery and sustained flashing lights that may affect those who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy or have other photosensitivities."
While remaining sensitive to a potential health risk in their film, Disney has also been careful not to reveal exactly which scenes in The Rise of Skywalker are potential risks for epileptics. It does seem a little strange that this would be the film which prompts Disney to issue such a warning, especially when one considers that Star Wars films have a lengthy history of bright, flashing lights.
At any rate, it’s completely understandable why Disney would want to ensure the release of this final installment goes smoothly. Far from being the final film in the Star Wars Skywalker saga, The Rise of Skywalker stands a great chance of being the best film in the new franchise, and ensuring everyone can safely enjoy the film to the utmost is surely a major priority right now for Disney.
