Star Wars: Mark Hamill Says Alec Guinness Had The Patience of a Saint

Mark Hamill said his former Star Wars co-star Alec Guinness had the patience of a saint for putting up with him and Harrison Ford on set. Back in 1977, before Star Wars became one of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, no one knew who Mark Hamill was, and although Harrison Ford had been cast in various small television roles and some TV movies his name was not nearly as famous as it would soon become, either.

Guinness, however, had already starred in critically acclaimed films like The Bridge on the River Kwai, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations by the time Star Wars came along, with his entire career spanning back more than thirty years previous. Guinness' performance as Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most iconic in the entire franchise, and one Hamill himself looked back upon numerous times when playing the older version of Luke Skywalker in Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

It's apparent when watching the original Star Wars movie the characters are having a great time on set, and according to a recent Twitter post by Mark Hamill Alec Guinness "had the patience of a saint" for putting up with all of the nonsense he and Harrison Ford subjected him to. This comment came soon after one of the now-daily Star Wars celebration videos, this time showcasing some behind-the-scenes footage of Ford and Hamill cracking jokes in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon while Guinness stoically attempts to continue acting next to them.

According to Hamill, people often ask him if it was fun making the Star Wars movies, probably because the actors themselves are so clearly enjoying their time on set that the emotions bled through onto the screen. Although some fans see the above featurette as nothing but an advertising ploy by Disney, something to tug at the nostalgic heartstrings present in many current generation Star Wars fans, others (like Hamill) see it as a true celebration of the fun times they all had together throughout the years.

Although Alec Guinness sadly passed in August of 2000 and did not get to see the true extent of Star Wars' lasting popularity, it's nice to know he was tolerable of the younger actor's antics while on set. While viewers do not yet know if Hamill will follow in Guinness' character's footsteps and become a force ghost before the end of the Skywalker saga arrives later this month, fans can rest assured Hamill was likely as tolerant, if not even more so, of his own younger co-stars during the filming of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
