Director James Wan shares behind-the-scenes images from 2018's Aquaman for the film's 1 year anniversary. Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry first appeared in archive footage in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, before being fully introduced in the critically panned Justice League in 2017.
Aquaman used to be a superhero that people would make fun of, but nobody was laughing when Aquaman hit theaters. Aquaman made a lot of money at the box office and has even become the second-highest-grossing film in the DCEU, second only to Wonder Woman. Unlike many of the early films in the DCEU, Aquaman received mostly positive reviews by both fans and critics alike. Aquaman has come and gone from theaters and got its home release back in March. Now, Wan has given fans a new look at the film.
With the wild success of Aquaman, a sequel was bound to happen. At the beginning of the year, Aquaman was confirmed to be in development, but the sequel isn't expected to start filming until mid-2021. Momoa will of course be returning as Aquaman, but he is also working on the story with writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Black Manta and King Orm have both been confirmed for the sequel, but the latter won't be the main villain in Aquaman 2. Wan is returning to direct Aquaman 2, and will also be a producer on the horror spin-off The Trench, which will focus on the underwater creatures from the first film.
While fans are eagerly anticipating Aquaman 2, it won't be the next film Wan directs. Aquaman 2 won't be released until 2022, so Wan and Warner Bros. clearly have their hands full with other projects. In fact, eight DC films are expected to come out between now and the time Aquaman 2 hits theaters, so fans have quite a while to wait for the sequel. That being said, behind-the-scenes images like this will keep certainly get fans' attention and keep the hype going for Aquaman 2.
