The CW's multi-episode crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, which starts airing Sunday, December 8th, has even more surprise characters appearing than viewers currently know about. The Arrowverse, as it's commonly referred to, is The CW's superhero franchise which includes Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and the most recent addition, Batwoman. All of these characters exist in the same universe, and they have interacted through various crossovers in the past, such as the most recent crossover event Elseworlds, which aired last year.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is based on the well-known DC Comics story of the same name written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by George Pérez. Set up here progressively through each individual show, everyone's favorite DC heroes will soon have to come together to fight the Anti-Monitor, a being who wants to destroy the multiverse. The Arrowverse's biggest crossover event yet will begin airing its episodes this Sunday, with another one following on both Monday, December 9th and Tuesday, December 10th. The final two episodes of the Crisis event will air after the channel's winter break, on Tuesday, January 14th. Crisis on Infinite Earths is the CW's most anticipated event yet, and it will feature a cameo from Cress Williams, who stars as the title character on Black Lightning. Also a superhero show, Black Lightning has always remained separate from the Arrowverse, until now.
In an interview with IndieWire, Marc Guggenheim, showrunner for Crisis on Infinite Earths and executive producer on both Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, hinted at all the surprises to come:
There are at least six characters who appear in the first three hours that we haven’t announced. And I’m working on even more for the last two hours. So we’ve obviously announced a bunch, but I really want the audience to be able to tune in and still be surprised. So there are surprises of sorts that we’ve managed to keep secret, and not without great difficulty, I will tell you.
This is an interesting bit of new information, as there have already been so many guest stars announced to be appearing in Crisis on Infinite Earths. With the multiple universe aspect being a big focus, viewers will be seeing many familiar faces from other DC shows and movies. Tyler Hoechlin is returning as the Arrowverse's Clark Kent, but fans will also see Tom Welling's version of the character from Smallville, as well as Arrowverse alum Brandon Routh, who famously played Superman in 2006's Superman Returns, playing another version of the character. A few others set to appear are both Elizabeth Tulloch and Erica Durance reprising their different versions of Lois Lane, and Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman in a variety of DC animated shows, movies, and games, will be guest starring as Kingdom Come's Batman.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is going to be the biggest crossover in the Arrowverse's history, and will have huge ramifications for all the shows moving forward. Though based on the well-known comic storyline, the Arrowverse has always deviated from the source material in some ways, making the story their own, and there are bound to be differences from the original story in the show's version. Hopefully, honoring the DC shows and characters of the past, as well as the current Arrowverse, is something Crisis on Infinite Earths is taking seriously, and is planning on making this event (now years in the making) one worth waiting for.
