It was Colin Trevorrow’s idea to have Rey and Poe Dameron meet at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Trevorrow, who is best known for working on Jurassic World, was originally supposed to write and direct Star Wars 9. He and his writing partner Derek Connolly left the project due to “creative differences” before it was handed over to J.J. Abrams. The Abrams-directed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to release next month with Trevorrow and Connolly retaining story credit.
There have been a lot of revisions to the sequel trilogy since Star Wars: The Force Awakens' release in 2015. That film, which was written and directed by Abrams, served as the first part of a proposed 3-person creative relay race; Rian Johnson continued The Force Awakens’ story with The Last Jedi and Colin Trevorrow would continue The Last Jedi’s story with Star Wars 9. Unlike the original Star Wars trilogy, Disney gave creative autonomy to each writer/director; for example, Abrams conceived The Force Awakens with certain story threads in mind, ideas which Johnson didn’t necessarily have to honor.
Speaking with Empire, Trevorrow opened up about some of his input in the franchise. In particular, Trevorrow mentions a discussion he had with Johnson about a scene he thought should be included in The Last Jedi. The scene is one near the very end of the film and depicts Rey and Poe meeting for the first time. "I just asked Rian if he could include a little moment where Rey and Poe meet for the first time," Trevorrow said. "They’re such beloved characters, it felt right for them to have some history in the next movie. I thought the way he did it was perfect.
Any more input Trevorrow has had in the franchise is being kept under wraps, much like the rest of the story. What we do know is The Rise of Skywalker’s final script resulted in a very different movie than the one Trevorrow would have made. Star Wars 9’s story has been reworked by Abrams and his writing partner Chris Terrio to include a character Trevorrow never even envisioned would return: the Emperor, who's inclusion was Abram’s idea. Rumors surrounding Trevorrow’s departure suggest his first draft wasn’t up to snuff, however, the director doesn’t seem to harbor any hard feeling and appears humbled by the part he’s played in Star Wars history. "I’m grateful to JJ for embracing some of our ideas," said Trevorrow. "It’s exciting that fans will get to see the moments that felt essential to all of us."
It’s curious Trevorrow would refer to moments which felt essential while also discussing Rey and Poe's meeting. One could infer his desire to establish history between the two before the trilogy’s final chapter might mean something for the character’s futures. Rey's actress, Daisy Ridley, has said she doesn't think there needs to be any romance in The Rise of Skywalker but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't happen. It’s safe to say Rey and Poe will have more scenes together and play a pivotal role in The Last Jedi's finale.
